I've already made a couple of suggestions, but it might help if you were more specific about the purpose of seeking out these books. Are you looking for foundational knowledge to pursue further learning? Do you want to understand the basics of chemistry, for example? Or are you looking to be able to speak more intelligently but more generally about these topics among of a group of others with more education than you have received?

OP, you mentioned "high school science". That covers a lot of ground: biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, all separate courses. You could probably find those used online, or at a public library. Biology and earth science would have some chemistry in them, so those might be best to start with. I wouldn't attempt to teach myself the other two; I'd take a community college course in each, if I wanted to learn that material.
