They still are as internships in college. I went to college and had a full semester working part time at a tech company. And it was one credit and a grade. And the company paid me as well. They don't do that anymore but there are still unpaid internships students can get through their college.
Lots of colleges that have STEM majors require co-ops or internships before graduation. When we were looking at colleges for my youngest son, that was something that we focused on. He ended up going to a college that emphasized paid internships and he got one the summer after his sophomore year, kept it as a part time job during the school year and then full time in the summers. After he graduated, they offered him a permanent position. https://www.usnews.com/education/bes...co-op-programs

Your student was lucky to have such a well-informed and involved parent on such a practical level. Not everyone does. Bravo! But good for your student, too, for mastering a STEM field. Go, team!

The colleges usually have campus recruitment events and lists of internship opportunities in their career center. It's not like the parents walk their kids around to the various booths. The students, themselves, attend those events, talk to their course advisors and the career center to seek out those internship opportunities. There are, of course, parents that help their kids connect up with opportunities outside of the school. That's different.
