My opinion is that band directors don't really listen to the lyrics of most songs, they just hear the catchy music. Our HS marching band has been playing "Centerfold" for a decade. The J. Geils Band - Centerfold Lyrics - Centerfold - Lyrics On Demand One line goes,
"Those soft and fuzzy sweaters
Too magical to touch
Too see her in that negligee
Is really just too much"

No one bats an eye when they play it even though anyone that lived through the 70's knows what that songs about as do most of the students.

A few years ago when I was a PTA president we had a local dance group come in for a festival. One of the parents gave me a head's up on a song the girls were going to dance to that had very suggestive lyrics. I got in touch with the owner and she said she had never really listened to the words. I assured her that some parents would and she should find an alternative song. She was ticked off but did.

I'm sorry but I find this to be kind of silly. It's just a song and honestly not a bad one, it's like the summer anthem. Everyone I know has heard this song, the lyrics are catchy and fun.

And please if they have an issue with the song, go check out the songs that are being played at a middle school dance. I'll bet you that they are a lot worse.

Texas, not surprised. This would have never happened here in NY.

Well yeah, but more so in small towns in the south. I went to college in a small town in upstate NY, but it was liberal enough that they wouldn't do anything like that.

Clearly the whole band is protesting so I doubt these are the sentimentalities of the entire state. Everyone I know thinks it's stupid.

Well of course the students are going to protest. That makes no difference and isn't my point.

Our drill/dance team did a high kick routine for a Pep Rally to the song Hell is For Children (by Pat Benatar) way back when - ages ago - when I was in high school (in Texas). No one cared and we thought, eh? Child abuse, smiley dance routine. Whatever.

What an odd choice for high kick routine! I was on a "pre-dance team" dance team when I was 11 or 12 and some of the songs we did routines to were rather lewd!! None of us seemed to notice at the time, and none of the parents cared either. People are growing more and more uptight about all the wrong things, it seems. I'd much rather have people concerned about raising their kids to be polite, considerate, contributing members of society.... and to stop running in the damn stores... rather than worry about a song that NO one would be offended by if it proclaimed "I kissed a boy!"!
