EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) - A 10-year-old boy reportedly found hanging from a coat hook at his suburban Chicago school took his own life, according to a preliminary coroner's office ruling on Wednesday.

A daily ledger released by the Cook County medical examiner noted "hanging" and "suicide" as the cause of death for fifth-grader Aquan Lewis, who was found unresponsive in a bathroom at the Evanston school Tuesday afternoon and was pronounced dead at a hospital Wednesday morning.

Coroner: Death of boy, 10, at Ill. school suicide

What I don't get is how there were no cameras in that school. Were they waiting for something to happen? Where I live, all schools are required to have cameras in and around their facilities. This includes elementary, and yes, even pre-k. -mmccul

I'm not fully buying this as a suicide for some reason. a common (if rather cliche) tactic of a bully is to hoist smaller kids onto hooks by their shirts. something like this could have happened to this boy, who knows.

this could also be an accidental death, maybe he was climbing up on the door and slipped and his shirt snagged, choking him. he could have even been playing that stupid choking game

or maybe I'm just trying not to think of the reasons why a 10 year old kid would kill himself. what must his life had been like for him to willingly choose such a horrible way to die?

one outcome I can see out of this is door hooks being made to give way if more than, say 30lbs, is placed on it. granted, it's such an odd way to die, but parents of students at the school may request such hooks, if they exist, to prevent repeat accidents

I sure hope they are not in the bathrooms.... at least where I live, it would be illegal. All the cameras in the world would not have seen this young boy who was found in the restroom.

Very tragic indeed.

Bullying -> Bullycide: a suicide caused from bullying and depression
Students for Safer Schools

Bullying other children to the point where the victim becomes suicidal is, sadly, not uncommon. Florida passed its anti-bullying statute this last year-- but the schools still take the "oh, it's just normal kid stuff" tack. When nine year olds are on anti-anxiety meds and ten year olds are hanging themselves, that's not just normal kid stuff.

Absolutely right. But as I've written elsewhere, typical school administrators will generally do anything to keep from having to report crimes, much less misdemeanors, in their schools. I don't know if that applies to this particular principal, but it is widespread and contributes greatly to the fact that many schools are just horrible places to be.

I agree. I think it sounds like a murder.
How would he hoist himself up like that to a hook above himself???
