A troll used to be some small ugly thing that hung out under bridges, but now days a troll is someone who starts threads for the purpose of riling up the members of a forum by posting questionable or controvesial subjects. The troll typically sits back and watches everyone go at it. Then they start another thread - lather rinse, repeat.

Oh....that would be irritating. ... Thanks for the info.
You see it all the time on the Internet. It becomes very irritating, especially after a horrible crisis and someone always writes, "Well, they (insert current story here) deserved it." Then they just sit back and wait for others to respond. But, responding just gives them what they want - attention. On Wikipedia, they have an expression: Don't feed the trolls.
Yes, and a lot of people will also have multiple ID's on a forum. One ID will post something controversial, and then they will use a second ID and post something to further fan the flames. So even if "normal" individuals aren't feeding the troll, the troll can still stir the pot by posting on it themselves, by using a different name. People can get software that hides or changes their ISP numbers with each post, so forum admins can't tell who has multiple ID's. It's a scary world on the internet.
A lot of people will call you a troll if they don't agree with what you have to say..
This is so true. There is a certain group here that thinks if you don't agree, you're a troll. Different points of view aren't well accepted on City-Data. In middle school, a clique like that would be called the snotty girls. I call them Barbies because they're plastic and fake.
I've been called a troll lots of times, but I'm not. I just don't live in a mold.
