NEW YORK, May 30 (UPI) -- Hugging among U.S. teenagers has become so prevalent some schools say they've banned the embrace or imposed limits on how long they last.
"Touching and physical contact is very dangerous territory," said Noreen Hajinlian, principal of George G. White School, a junior high school in Hillsdale, N.J., which banned hugging. "It wasn't a greeting. It was happening all day."
Yeah..hugging was very popular where I went to school (2 years ago).
Now that I'm in college its just as popular, if not more. EVERYONE hugs.
Thats a bit problematic for me since Im not too fond of that type of intimate contact. LOL
I think teenagers hug more because their primary contact source is texting! They don't know how to have face-to-fact interpersonal relationships, so they go from one extreme to another - no contact to too much contact.
When I picked up my kids from high school I had to wait while they hugged everyone. Guys, girls, it didn't matter. Some guys don't like to hug each other but they never turn down a hug from a girl!
I noticed that it is especially prevalent among girls; I never have seen two adolescent males hugging the way the girls do (alot do the "bro hug," though.)
I started thinking about it and now remember that it was also popular when I was an adolescent (about 20 years ago.) It seems particularly popular with the younger adolescents and tends to dwindle as he/she ages and matures.
As to why, I have no idea. But I certainly do think that it has increased and become a bit of a nuisance, especially for educators and administrators who are concerned about time management and health safety.
When I was in high school, nobody hugged much except the Down's Syndrome Kid.
I don't remember his name because Political Correctness hadn't been invented yet so we just called him "The Mongoloid".
He was a happy, friendly guy and he especially liked to hug the girls.
But he was run over by the school bus and killed.
Everybody hugged each other at his funeral, but that's the last time I saw any major high school hugging activity.
The pregnant girls in the Home Ec class were always hugging each other, but that didn't really count.
Those two guys who always drew pictures of women's dresses were pretty affectionate, but they didn't really hug, they usually just held hands.
I guess we just live in a very "hug friendly" area! Everyone around here hugs, and nothing is thought of it. I don't remember anyone hugging that much when I was a kid. Now you hug everyone, it seems - I'm okay with it!
On a somewhat cute note - When my daughter (4th grade) gets off the bus every day, there is a line of younger kids waiting to get hugs from her before she gets off the bus! Her bus driver just laughs and says she is used to waiting for dd's "fan club" to get their hugs!
