There is plenty of research to show that retaining a child does more harm than good and absolutely no research to show that retention is good. Instead of asking Ivorytickler to show you the research she mentioned, why don't you look it up yourself...it's not hard to do.

My district stopped routinely retaining kiss back in 1987. Research has shown that one of the most consistent results of retaining kids is having them quit school before graduating. We never ever retain ANY CHILD after kindergarten or 1st grade. Once they have been locked inot their peer group and have transited into concrete operational thinking in 2nd-3rd grade, the effects of retention are horrible.

Any district that gives a test to third graders and then retains them is in the dark ages of edcuational research.

That's just plain disgusting.

It's been one of the best decisions we've ever made with our daughter(3rd grade retention). It was one of the best decisons my hubbys parents made for him(kindergarten). It was one of the best decision my parents did for me(3rd grade). The so called "experts" that we faced at the school meeting regarding our daughter couldn't believe we make the income we do. We are supposed to be successful. HaHa! Live and let live. Each parent needs to decided what is be for their child. I don't look at statistics and I don't like to follow the crowd.

My brother was held back a year from K. My parents took him in for a "maturity" test and they determined that he was not ready for it. To this day, my dad regrets it because my brother (older) struggled academically and socially, and even today is prone to getting himself into trouble. My dad told me that he wishes he could take back the decision to hold him back because he felt that it would not make him more ready and mature to put him around kids younger than him. Looking at how he has turned out, I am inclined to agree.
