I THINK THE STATE OF Ca IS GOING A LITTLE OVERBOARD ON THE REQUIREMENTS FOR WHAT 1ST GRADERS SHOULD KNOW....WHAT DOES EVERYONE ELSE THINK ABOUT IT AND WAS IT LIKE THIS LAST YEAR?

California always is on the bleeding edge of education. About the time they're figuring out something doesn't work, half the rest of the country is just starting.
The CA math standards haven't changed for several years. At least 5-10, but I'm too lazy to look up when the last revision was.
I taught 1st grade math for a few months. It was hard for many of them, yes, but most of the ones I had also struggled in K math (and K everything) the year before.
I am not sure how different it is but I know it is different because my son that is in Kindergarten is getting math papers this year that my son in 1st grade wasn't getting last year....seems like much, I am thankful my son loves math and is good at it but the teacher says a lot of kids are having problems. Poor kids are going to get burnt out before they reach 2nd grade!
Oh, I see now you mean the Houghton Mifflin Math curriculum, California Math, not the standards themselves.
Our district adopted that particular curriculum last year, so this is year 2 for us with it.
I didn't teach the 1st grade version through the year but I did notice that it started off with some pretty difficult concepts, and was fast-paced to boot. It relaxed a little bit a few chapters into it. The big thing I've noticed with that curriculum is the "spiraling" - they keep going back and hitting the old things again. So though some kids won't get it the first time around, the goal is that by the 3rd or 4th time, something clicks.
The K stuff is ok for the most part (I taught it all last year and am starting up again with it this year), I thought, pretty good range of activities (kinesthetic, art, etc.) although I'm not sure I liked the heavy emphasis on estimation in the middle-to-end of the year. It seemed a little out of sync with what the brain is developmentally like at that age to me.
Are you "...a first grade teacher", or a "first grader"?
