Our experience was, our daughter is a dancer, she had maxed out the options in our small town. So we started investigating Art based schools. Her dance teacher recommended one out of state and one in state. Also looked into the option of sending her to a ballet company where they would provide housing along with her attending school in the area. After checking all options we decided the instate boarding school suited our family the best. She was close enough we could visit anytime and attend her performances. The school is also renowned for its academics so she was able to receive the both of best worlds.
She loved her school, and has a wide range of friends from around the world. She has become a self sufficient, independent, strong woman. Not afraid of stepping out of the box and trying something new. I wish I could have had a little bit of her self confidence at her age.
Top boarding schools on the East Coast used to produce almost guaranteed entry into an Ivy league school. That ended in the early 1960s. I have no data to compare current performance at the college level.
Yes, but the Ivy League was far less influential in those days. It was more of a social club and not known for rigorous academics. Harvard, Yale and Princeton have always been prestigious and selective, but until recently it wasn’t that hard to get into Penn or Brown.
