We had a Catholic school I passed on the way to the public school where I was principal. One day I was talking to some of our teachers and mentioned that I was surprised at how short the girl's uniform skirts were at the Catholic school. The teachers laughed and said, "They roll the waist way up except when they are actually in school". Oh well.
I worked in a public school that had a school uniform policy. I really liked it, for many reasons. The uniform policy was very doable- it was basically school t-shirts (about 15 different varieties to choose from in the school colors) and sweatshirts (it was a warm climate- rarely a need for sweatshirts in school). Students could wear their hair the way they wanted, and wear the bottoms/footwear they chose (provided it met dress code- e.g., no underwear showing, shorts an appropriate length, etc.). I thought it was a great compromise on "individuality" and uniform code.
