I was accepted into NYU's medical program, but was rejected from Columbia. I was feeling extremely depressed initially; then I persevered, but now, I'm starting to feel a little sad again. Anyone ever feel this way and have advice.
Getting accepted into NYU's medical program is a big deal.
Consider all the people who get rejected from MANY medical programs.
Consider yourself lucky that you can even contemplate medical college or a career in medicine.
There are so many young people and/or people in general out there who can't even contemplate college because it would be too big a financial burden, either for themselves or their family.
I hate to bring race into this, but as a black woman, it's a BIG DEAL that I try my hardest to be exceptional, academically speaking. I feel like NYU was second best. I have to jump higher and be better. I feel inadequate.

I personally think NYU is a great school. I'd love to go there.
I know a girl that graduated from my high school (black) and she got a full ride to NYU.
I'm a black woman too and I can definitely understand wanting to excel (maybe to show other people that we can excel academically or whatever) but don't beat yourself up over this.
You're already doing great as black woman by getting accepted into medical school. You can be a great inspiration to the upcoming generation of black women.
You're already ahead of the game by having an undergraduate degree.
College admission is often a numbers game. Don't be hard on yourself, you should be proud of getting into NYU even if YOU consider it "second best". In life you rarely get what you think is "first best" anyway. I know people who consider NYU the pinnicle of their dreams, it's all in your perception!
Look at it this way...you got into a medical school! My stepbrother applied to medical school and didn't get in to any the first year so he decided to get a Master of Science degree that year specializing in the field he liked and he ended up getting published in JAMA. He was accepted into medical school the next year and is now a well respected doctor and professor. Don't sell yourself short. Enjoy the fact that you have the chance to be in the profession that you want. Congratulations!

Here's my advice: freakin' cope. You got into NYU medicine FFS.
This is like being depressed because you missed the lottery by 1 number and had to settle for the $250,000 second prize. I mean, hey, it's still pretty nice, isn't it?

I know I should suck it up. I read somewhere today, 'NYU= school for Columbia rejects.' I almost cried.
Oh goodness.
At least you got accepted to NYU. I know some people who cried because they didn't get into NYU.
Trust me, the world will keep spinning and you will do just fine.
NYU and Columbia are great schools.
The thing that should make you cry (or almost cry) is the tuition!
