I would say the best language would be the most logical one. Although English is my first language, it is not exactly logical, especially when it comes to spelling. Part of the problem is that we have a lot of French words in English, which throw spelling rules out the window. That can be very confusing to someone learning the language for the first time, especially a young child.
I don't understand the question. By "best", do you mean nice-sounding, easy to learn, useful, popular, rare, most spoken... ?
Yes, and this nice-sounding, easy to learn, useful, popular.
But everyone likes some kind of language (even if it is a foreign-), and each thinks his own way.
Better for what? My answer will vary depending on what we're talking about. Just best, well I'll pick my own because I know it. Better as a second language on top of my own? That would depend on what you're doing for a living. Given my first language is English, I'd choose Spanish as my second language because so much industry has headed for Mexico. As a teacher, I'd choose Spanish again because it's most likely to be of use with ESL students. Living where I do, Arabic would be nice because then I could actually read the signs in stores on the other side of town and know what the people behind me are saying as I stand in line at the grocery store.
With Latin, you effectively unlock not only a great deal of English, but as a bonus, get a massive understanding of French, Spanish, Italian, Romanian, and Portuguese. It's a six-fer.
