Got my letter yesterday after school. At least mine was afterwards. I ran into a gal who had to leave work to go to HR during the school day today to get hers and then return to work. She had been with the school for 10 yrs.
So, let's sign here and everytime you see a new name- say a prayer.

You're down near Norfolk, right? Is it due to your program being cut or because of changes in class size?
The person who had been with the system for 10 years, was hers because the program is being eliminated (example, elementary strings)?
Williamsburg.
Cut in program- honestly, its a smart financial choice.
Person with 10 yrs- eliminated a secretarial position
More to come I am sure- we have 2 weeks for people to be notified
Sorry to hear... It's not in teaching, but I was pink slipped last year when the economy was falling apart - and that was after getting a grad degree and being brought on into a selective "leadership development" program at a big company. I got to lead myself right to the unemployment line.
It sucks, no matter what line of work you're in... but you move on and you will find something else in time. It took me a while, but eventually I did.
Don't know about VA but here in MD when a program is dropped (America's Choice for example) the teacher may be RIFfed from the building but will then transfer to another school. The people (classroom based anyway, forget losing anyone in the central offices or regional offices except by attrition) who are most in danger of a total layoff are those who are on Provisional Certification.

That works here if you are a classroom teacher. Say for example you are certified to teach K-3. You could move to another building with a K-3 opening. But if you teach 4th grade strings, and they cut the elementary strings program and you don't have a certification to teach something else, then you would be out.
