We're wanting to take the plunge and convert to refrigerated air. We were prepared for some sticker shock ($$$) but not like we're seeing on several estimates. We have four estimates with a $3000 difference between the high and low.

All are for the same installation, with not top of the line nor the cheapest equipment either. We have to have a new furnace too, to support the air unit. There's no complications with the install, no new duct work needed, easy access in the attic, minimal electrical - our house is only 1600 sf.....so...

If you have any recommendations or care to share your experience and a ball park dollar # so we have something to compare our estimates with, we would appreciate it a lot.

My sister has a larger house - 2 stories and probably 3,500 sq ft - and it cost her $10,000 (that's what she admitted to anyway) about 2 years ago. Knowing her, I'm sure she went with the lowest bidder. She has the rooftop units, but even so, there were significant alterations required.

I converted my previous house about four years ago. At the time, I got an American Standard 3.5 ton unit for $3200. I know the same unit goes for around 5K now. I would guess the humidity we had the last two summers have shot up the price.

Converted about 5-6 years ago. Never been sorry. We had two units for a 2,500 sq ft. We chose to put them on the ground which I don't regret. It was about 7K and had King's Air do the work. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. They used same duct work but had to replace one heater.

Call Dale Nelums at 915-779-3388, Talk only to him. He was doing this work but am not sure if he still is. He does good work and uses good equipment. Good Luck.
