First time I noticed it. What's to prevent a guy (on the south side of the border, of course) from aiming his AK-47 at it? Has DHS/CBP thought this one through?

approx. 8:15-8:30a.m. on my way to work west-side, there was a unmarked white blimp, about the size of a blimp you'd see at a sporting event. Not tethered, but rather flying slowly, along the border, maybe 500 ft. in the air, from MCR to downtown. Looks like for surveillance / border monitoring I suppose. Kinda cool, but how can it not be an easy target? - especially in light of what happened at City Hall two days ago. ?Quien sabe?

Navy blimp stops at Las Cruces airport - Las Cruces Sun-News

Posted: 06/28/2010 10:55:48 PM MDT
LAS CRUCES - It wasn't one of those new-fangled space vehicles that will be flown out of Spaceport America, north of Las Cruces, but the U.S. Navy blimp that has been at Las Cruces International Airport since Sunday is just as interesting.
"It's roughly the same size (as the Goodyear blimp)," said Adam Creadore, a contractor for the Navy who flies the blimp. "But it has many more utilitarian uses."
Case in point, the blimp will fly today to the Gulf Coast, where it will monitor the massive oil spill disaster and assist as called upon to help contain the spill.

I wonder what ever happened to the tethered blimp program that was in effect about 20 years ago? I seem to recall those blimps were deployed along the border. Perhaps they turned out to be too easy of a target.

The training for those blimps was carried out at McGregor range in the complex that is east of the new prison on US-54.

Should be great fun for the narcos to target practice on the drones that are the new eye in the sky along the border.
