There's some other kind of food?!?!? Gourmet is fine, but I'd take homemade tamales and tortillas over fancy pants food any day of the week.

I really appreciate the feed back from everyone It looks like we will be visiting in the next month or two. We'll check out some neighborhoods and try to get a feel for the city. Any must do/see/eat recommendations to get a real look at El Paso?

The Eastwood / Burges neighborhoods* are nice with many shopping & restaurant options but I wouldn't go much further east if I worked downtown.

I lived on the west side, I'm deployed from Ft. Bliss now, and that's where I'll go when I get back. It was recommended to me by a childhood friend who is currently a professor at UTEP. After having lived there for 6 months and getting to meet and speak with some locals, they love the west side and prefer living there for a variety of reasons: lower crime, better schools (couple of the guys I play basketball with are teachers so they might be biased), cleaner overall atmosphere, less traffic. Only thing missing that I can think of off the top of my head is a JC Penney but if you don't shop there anyway, it doesn't really matter.

The neighborhood, I think it's called Cimmaron, on the northeast of Helen of Troy and Resler is a great neighborhood. Grocery shopping is very convenient with the Wal Mart neighborhood store there (it does get very crowded after 10am, though). There are a lot of places to run and bike. Of all the places I have lived, I have never seen as many active people as I have in EP.

I think there are a few decent places for food in EP if you ask around. L&J's Cafe near the graveyard is the best Mexican food I've had yet there. Garufa's on the west side on Mesa is excellent but more like a date night type of place.

In all, I think EP is a great place and I've been to a few places courtesy of Uncle Sam and I definitely call it home now. In fact, I will be buying a home after deployment because when I get out of the Army, EP is where I want my permanent home to be!
