I live in New York now and this guy told me about some Mexican market that has a wide range of cheeses like cotija, panela, oaxaca, etc...

He was very surprised when I told him I never ate that kind of cheese and that I grew up eating muenster cheese along with asadero of course. So why is muenster cheese so popular in El Paso?

Also, is El Paso the only place where people eat bread with menudo? I get weird looks when I tell people I want bread instead of tortillas.

I guess Muenster cheese is so popular because the taste is subtle, so it's a versatile cheese that can be used in tons of dishes (tacos, enchiladas, gorditas, etc.) It also melts really well so works great in Mexican cooking.

About the bread thing - I think it's definitely more widespread in El Paso and parts of Texas than elsewhere. I ate some menudo at a family dinner in California and they served us corn tortilla - the heretics. Bolillo bread is so much better at soaking up the caldo goodness, and I don't see why anyone would want to eat with tortillas.

Almost 10yrs later... So I always wonder about the muenster cheese. My only thought is the German immigrants brought the concept during WWII. EPTX had a large incoming of German immigrants then.
And pan bollilo taste so much better than tortillas with menudo.
