I am moving to El Paso soon and I am thinking of purchasing a convertible as my only vehicle. For those of you who already drive a convertible in El Paso -- is it too hot in the summer and/or too cold in the winter to drive with the top down? I will be communting on Mesa, 20 minutes each way. Any advice or thoughts on owning a convertible in El Paso would be ahighly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well.
Not specifically about convertibles.
But I had a sports car when I moved there.
Within 2 months, I garaged it and got an SUV.

Why?

Because the drivers are beyond stupid, I have never seen so much drinking and driving in my life, rollover MVA was our trauma of choice in the ER, and the chances of something happening to you in a small car with not much roof support is something to consider.

Oh, and make sure you have uninsured motorist insurance. Cuz the peeps who hit you don't have car insurance.

Stan, thank you for your input. I had not considered the safety aspect before and so I am very glad that you replied. I will now re-consider getting a MX-5.

I am a big convertible enthusiast and the weather there is pretty good for it (minus dust storms and the hottest part of summer), butI couldn't do it there.

get a car with functioning air conditioning.

It's too hot in the summer -- you can really burn yourself on the car's surfaces.

I question whether a convertible with the top down is EVER practical as a sole vehicle.

Convertible passengers need to use sun screen year around or face the possibility of skin cancers later.

Get your MX-5...just don't have it as your everyday vehicle.

I always had a convertible when I lived in El Paso. And I drove them every day. I never had a problem--my cars always had heaters and air conditioners.
