If you look at it from the outside it is a shame how it is deteriorating. It looks like they are making no effort whatsoever to upkeep this hotel. Havenot been inside in a while, but I hear a lot of the rooms are no longer usable. This is sad!

Yes, that place has really terrible reviews! Obviously it is being very poorly managed. Too bad, it is a nice building.

as I understand it (may be wrong); it was bought several years ago by a Mexican conglomerate and they just haven't been putting any money into it. Really needs updating and upkeep. Last time I went there, I arranged rooms for a mediation. The staff and the meeting rooms were just so - so.

I've been told that the Tiffany dome has a crack in it, too.

Yeah, I'm not an idiot. They need to re-invest in the hotel. There's been articles in El Paso Inc about it. Several people within the city's tourism department are upset at the lack on upkeep in the Camino. I'm sure when you went 10 years ago, it was great, but its not even a Top 50 hotel in El Paso anymore! Doubletree kicks it's ass and the Indigo probably will too.

It may be of interest to readers to know that the present Camino Real is a latter day addition to the former Hotel Paso Del Norte, first opened in 1912 and now on the National Historic Register.

When the Pronaf shopping center in Juarez was developed, there was a Camino Real Hotel there that was very popular with tourists. I believe it is still in operation.

Here is a bit of information on the Mexican hotel chain that currently owns the El Paso hotel:

Quote:
Camino Real established the first internationally backed luxury hotel chain in Mexico and ended 31 years later, in 1993.

In 2000, Camino Real (chain) was bought by business group Grupo Empresarial Ángeles for US$252 million. The deal included six hotels plus operating rights to 16 total hotels.

Currently there are 18 Camino Real hotels in Mexico, with one US unit in El Paso, Texas, which was built in a historic hotel originally constructed in 1912. Grupo Real Turismo, the unit of GEA that operates hotels, also operates Quinta Real resorts and Real Inn hotels, which cater to business travelers.
The so-called "Tiffany Dome" in the original Hotel Paso Del Norte lobby has no recorded manufacturer, so it's not certain who made it, or if it has any connection to Tiffany. Best guess is that a Chicago firm was involved.[/quote]

Went there for a wedding reception. It was okay but not up to what it should be . It is sad that owners don't want to bring the place back up to standards when Westin remodelled it back in the '80s.
