The worst frequent weather problem in El Paso, by far, are high winds and dust storms. Usually there is at least one windy day a year that tears up older roofs or causes downed power lines. Sometimes that happens 2-3 times, usually in late winter or spring. There are several lesser dust storm days - those are pretty rough on sensitive lungs. But balance that against blizzards, hurricanes, or earthquakes. The key is having a good roof and well insulated windows - for both dust and energy.

The only disaster that really threatened many people I know in El Paso, and destroyed most of a neighbor's property, was the flood of 2006. That was a once in a generation event. It dumped several inches of rain in a day - the people along hillside slopes were hardest hit (I lived right along Mesa and Sunland Park, where a few nearby businesses were levelled). But that is a once in a generation event. People I know in Houston have had 4-5 worse floods to contend with in this decade alone.

Some remnant Tropical Storms do make it into El Paso, such as Dolly in 2008. But at most it causes some flooding that is not unusual during monsoon season.

Once or twice a winter, it usually gets cold enough to threaten your pipes. The worst freeze by far was actually in February 2011, when it was below freezing for nearly three days, and caused a lot of pipe damage to people who did not run a drip.

There may have been a few tornado watches or warnings here in the last 30 years. But straight winds are a far bigger threat.

Or flips over a semi truck or two! I’ve seen that a couple of times. And I’ve also experienced a few hail storms. One a few years ago really damaged a lot of cars. I was at a car lot on Far East side and they had a bunch for sale that had dings all over them. I got caught in one on the highway and was able to park under a bridge till it passed.

I am not sure about no major acts coming here. If you see my previous post, you will see my sample...and most of those are pretty major.....a snippet of that post:

Khalid is from EP, Sean Mendes was here recently, Cardi B (though after two postponements), Ariana Grande, Elton John, Cirque de Soleil, TransSiberian Orchestra, James Taylor, Kiss (this spring), Britney Spears, Michael Buble…..and many more.

Now let's add: One Direction (before they broke up) w/5 Seconds of Summer, the Eagles, Rolling Stones (w/Dave Matthews Band opening), Earth/Wind/and Fire, n Sync (back in the day), The Chainsmokers, and country singers I don't know (since I don't really follow that genre). This does not include NM State having performers like Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood.

In terms of Broadway shows, we haven't had Hamilton yet, but Wicked has been through twice, Lion King just last year and several other well known touring companies have come in.

We also have the Sun Bowl game every year which is a great opportunity to see great college teams from both coasts (ACC vs PAC 12) and future NFL stars....

That is all my tired little brain could come up with.

Thank you all for your responses. I really appreciate them. I am still not clear as to which areas are better, I see user @aab7855 mentions poverty in the "Lower Valley", and says most people will steer me towards the West Side. And that's where my confusion is. Which is the Lower Valley? What zip codes or cities do I stay away from? I am not from there, never been there. So saying things like "Lower Valley", "Upper Valley", East Side, West Side etc doesn't really clear my confusion.

Are neighborhoods better on the West side of US 54? or the East side of US 54? (I'm just taking the U.S. 54 as a point of reference from a map I am looking at). How about Northwest of US 54? I am a girl, if I ask for directions and you tell me go South 2 blocks, and then turn West... I'll just stand there not knowing what to do. Sorry, but it is what it is, I don't walk around with a compass in my hand.

I don't want to get bullied over this, and please save your sarcasm (in case you were thinking about it). I am seriously looking for help, and input. I am going straight to the point, and would like for someone to just speak to me in a way I can understand. I do really appreciate all of your answers and your help, I know most of you had given me precious and useful help. And "Happy New Year 2020" to all of you

I think the best way to serve yourself and your best interests would be to spend a week or even two with a realtor(s) here. While it's certainly possible and even is done to move somewhere without ever scouting it in person.

The properties you mentioned in a previous post...
1st house: 1724 Firehouse Dr, El Paso, TX 79936 East Side
2nd house: 14613 Spanish Point Dr, El Paso, TX 79938
3rd house: 1508 Bellview Ct, Northwest, El Paso, TX

....are very fine neighborhoods. Hopefully you'll get some of the location details you seek here on the board but I'm not sure that will make it clearer for you. But in any case I'm happy to see your fear of tornadoes and floods have passed.

"But in any case I'm happy to see your fear of tornadoes and floods have passed."

Yes, I believe everyone made it clear that tornadoes and floods are very unlikely to happen (rare occurrences) in El Paso, TX. So thank you all for that

As to the rest of your message I really appreciate you looking into the properties (addresses) I had previously posted. I will do my best to contact a couple of realtors and maybe they can assist me further. Thank you again to everyone that was kind enough to take the time to read and post!

I do recall that in the the early 1990s, major tours often stopped in El Paso or the Pan American center in Las Cruces (In 1992 alone, I recall U2 with Public Enemy, the infamous Guns N' Roses/Metallica tour, Metallica alone, Paul McCartney, and Van Halen around the same time!). Now it seems that many of the biggest acts these days seem to prefer to do multiple shows in a few very large metro areas and festivals. The classic tours where 40 cities would appear on the roster seem to be a thing of the past (remember the black rock tour shirts with the impressive list of cities on the back!). Now I feel old...

But some bands do seem to go out of their way to play El Paso. Kiss for instance.

I know "Westside" has for the most part zip code 79912. For me Westside probably starts at UTEP (79902) and encompasses everything going north on I-10 heading to New Mexico). Next to the "Westside" on the other side of I-10 is the Upper Valley (79932). On the other side of the Franklin Mountains from the "Westside" (technically the "Northwest" really) is the "Northeast" which is where the 54 is (79907). There is also Central, which includes much of downtown and a little bit south where I believe it hits the Lower Valley. Everything else heading south on I-10 down to Horizon is the ever growing Eastside.

El Pasoans like to identify folks by two things 1) Which high school did you go to and 2) Which part of El Paso do you live in? The directional geographic thing does conjure up what people may think of you...there used to be this sarcastic Barbie thing where they had Barbie stereotypically representing different parts of El Paso...like Westside Barbie, Central Barbie, Eastside Barbie, etc.)
