I´ve heard this a lot. Would you say this is true even further out, further east? I see nice houses in the Ysleta ISD south of I-10.

I've worked in neighborhoods south of I-10 that are statistically safer than neighborhoods on the west side (and the west side does not have high crime rates). In other words, the neighborhoods are very safe. The neighborhoods are bit further east and mostly working class. What stands out in these neighborhoods is the strong sense of community--much more so than what you will find on the west side.

People still look out for one another.

Don't go to El Paso, you will regret it. The traffic is bad, restaurant and food scene are lacking, no family entertainment, it's not very diverse. The job market is lacking etc....if you are coming from California you will be disappointed. Plus, if you bring your liberal mindset here and California attitude, you will just make El Paso worst. This is my 2 cents only but hey go for it and good luck!

This is one of the better threads about a city I've read on city-data, good job! It's appreciated. I mean I just read one about Boston and page after page of BS about everything but what the OP asked. So thanks to all who answered the questions. Mind if I ask a few myself?

I really appreciated hearing about the dust storms, as the climate data doesn't express that. That's the kinda thing people need to know about. And of all the weather related events in the world, that's about the least troublesome. You just stay in side for a day or two, right? I mean if it bugs you.

Speaking of bugs, I would really like to know what kind of pest bugs you'll generally find at your house? I saw a picture in EP that appeared to show very large cockroaches that were sorta hanging like fruit from a small tree in a park? Just curious. I'm not worried about bugs, I used to live in Kansas where there were tons. But are there tree hanging cockroaches? Scorpions? I mean getting into your homes. Fire ants?

Also if someone wanted to mention, high speed internet, where I live now there is only one provider of high speed internet and it's pretty bad. How is it in EP?

My last question is, I'm 65 and in good health, but I'm spoiled, I'm used to pretty darn good doctors and decent hospitals. One poster in this thread said the hospitals were "Scary" in EP. What do you folks think about your doctors, your specialists and your hospitals? Thank you for any response.

I've been studying and reading about EP for years, and I've compiled a huge long list of good things vs a few things I don't like. So that means it is indeed a pretty good place.

I am hoping to come for a long visit soon. I love Mexican food, but the only good burrito place where I live now it's 18$ for one burrito. Yikes!

No big cockroaches. I have been here since 86, and only have seen less than a dozen regular cockroaches in that time. Usually dead in foreclosed homes.
The dust storms tendcto happen in spring usually in the afternoon. Very rare to get Haboobs...usually just windy, so it looks hazy. March is most common month for them. And its not daily. More like 2 days (afternoons) a week.
Job pay is low, but so are housing prices. Property taxes are high.
There are some decent doctors here, but if you were diagnosed with a serious illness, i would recommend going to phoenix or dallas for a 2nd opinion and a treatment plan, and then you can do treatment plan here.
There are actually quite a few things to do here, both for kids and adults. Water park, amusement park, horse racing, wine festivals, daily wine tasting at vineyards, SXSW music festival downtown, Plaza Classic Filmfest , AAA baseball in new stadium, hiking, biking, muesuems, ice skating, hockey games, old Mesilla in NM, snow skiing 2 hrs north, 2 lakes with boating 2 hrs north, carlsbad caverns 3 hrs east, albuquerque ballon fest 4.5 hrs n, white sands 1.5 hrs n, space hall of fame in alamogordo, planetarium in alamogordo, indian petroglyphs just n of tularosa, old west town and show/chuckwagon supper in alto 2 hrs n,
Horseback riding along the river, flying lessons in santa teresa or el paso airports, hot air balloon launch/rides by grace gardens yearly, sprint and stock car racing, poker rooms. La union corn maze in fall, Ardevinos desert crossing fresh vegetable/fruit market in summer. Mountain biking on lost dog trail,4 wheeling in red sands.

Good post, thanks. Just curious why you would recommend going to Phoenix or Dallas for a 2nd opinion?

Also due to sale taxes, do people drive to New Mexico to shop sometimes to avoid the EP sales tax?

Its not common to do it for SALES tax. Its the property taxes that are high.
The drs and hospitals here are not that good. So going to dallas or phoenix would give you the advantage of a good 2nd opinion and a treatment plan that you could then have your drs do here.

The other things to consider as well is that food stamps or welfare are almost non-existent here. No free- housing or medical neither. You are better off moving to New York.

OK, I understand but I'd still like to know WHY you say the Drs and Hospitals are "not that good".

Medicare rates hospitals, here's EP https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcom...g=-106.4869314

FOUNDATION SURGICAL HOSPITAL OF EL PASO is rated 5 of 5 stars.

There are several rating systems, and they're all over the map, no consistency.

But several of the other hospitals in EP do rate pretty low. Sadly, it's a more and more common trend nationwide. In many places healthcare is going down hill.
