I was reading the EP Times online today and a story about the Ysleta indian reservation in east EP are hoping the legislature will approve for them to reopen the casino (Speaking Rock). That would be EP's second (Sunland Park). We have 3 major casinos on the city limits here in ABQ and a couple more within 20/25 min and they are booming and helping the Rez's with needed cash and also a big job provider for Albuquerqueans so i hope my hometown gets this one thru. Good Luck.........

I agree.

My view is that if Indians in OTHER states can have Casinos, the Tiguas should be allowed to reopen Speaking Rock.

Besides, again agreeing with you, that part of town is truly depressed (and depressing)...the money could be used in part to revitalize it. And I'm sure lots of people's/former employees' standard-of-living went down big-time when Speaking Rock had to close.

Grass growing in the old casino parking lots...what a shame.

The problem is, the indians sold there lands.. bought new land closer to the city and then built a casino on it. It is not the land given to them by the goverment.. so it does not follow the same rules as other indians. But maybe they can get a ruling by the supreme court to make this new land there home land and then they can tell Texas to stick it. I hope they re-open, El Paso needs the jobs.

I am a tigua indian living in california. I have not forgotten where my roots are. Our casino was doing very well, and we were helping the community of el paso. The fire dept. got new truck, schools were also helped. There are many more who were gaining something from our casino. Including the gov. Not to mention the big help it was giving us. I too hope and pray that they will let us open again, so this way we (tigua indians and the community of el paso) will be helped and profit from it. Just think of all jobs it bring too.

Here in Albuquerque the Casinos have to give the state a percentage of their earnings. Two of the Casinos have turned into full blown Casino/Resorts The Santa Anna Star which built the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and two Golf Courses near by, and Sandia Casino which Built a Hotel, Amphitheatre and Golf Course adjacent to the casino. Isleta Casino also has a golf course and is building a Hotel and indoor Water Park. These casinos have helped the area with several jobs and class A facilities. Personally I think they are a great asset to the area.

The Tiguas didn't "sell" their land. In 1751, King Carlos V of Spain granted them 36 square miles surrounding the Misión de Corpus Christi de la Isleta del Sur. That original building has long since washed away due to flooding, but the point is that the Tiguas had claim to a pretty big chunk of what is now the El Paso/Juárez area way before there was an El Paso, Texas, or even a United States.

Almost all of that land has been stolen (to put it plainly) by the subsequent governments of Texas and the U.S. who have at various times refused to recognize the land grant despite treaties agreeing to do so. Private land speculators and corrupt politicians also played a role by illegally filing conveyance paperwork (deeds) with the county.

The position of the State of Texas is that the Restoration Act of 1987 places Indian gaming under state jurisdiction. Ironically this was the very same law that was supposed to benefit the Tiguas. Federal courts have on more than one occasion upheld the ruling of the Texas Attorney General. Because legislative efforts on a federal level have failed (Jack Abramoff defrauded the the tribe out more than four million dollars) the ball is back in the court of state legislators--some of whom are planning to introduce legislation that will (hopefully) allow the Tiguas to re-open Speaking Rock.
