So when I lived in ELP, it was 79915. Everything was 79915 back then as was 915 the area code for everything west of the Pecos!

Times do change. I liked where I grew up, but almost 30 years later, it's a different story. The neighborhoods were never great, but people took care of their homes, grew grass and cared, and was safe. Not so much in certain neighborhoods now. My last vehicle costs more than any of the homes where I grew up, if that gives you any indication.

The style and architecture of the houses there is awesome. The west side continues to expand and improve.. and thats great news.

Speaking of the North East Community College, it is expanding, as is the rest of the North East.. we have continued growth here as well. I only wish El Paso would embrace the style and architecture of UTEP and spread it around the city as a distinct character of El Paso.

Are you talking about the Temple Mt.Sinai & the Mission Hills (79902 zip code) area w/that 1960's Brady Bunch Art Deco/Ranch style architecture? That is an awesome area & bar none my favorite part on EP's west side. My parents lived in that area in the early/mid 70's. What many people may not be aware of is that the 79902 zip code is quite exclusive also.

For the past 4 years almost, I have seen a slew of universities. Some fairly "prestigious" East Coast universities & I have to say UTEP is one of the most GORGEOUSLY unique campus's. Currently I'm living in Jakarta, Indonesia & believe it or not many Asian design (I.E. UTEP's Bhutanese architecture) style compliment & work well w/the Southwestern motif.

Yeah I think thats it... on N. Stanton Street. 1960 Brady Bunch style.. yeah thats the area.. I love that style. Thats my favorite part of town as well. It just feels like home.

I envy where your at. Its a very pretty country. I agree, thats why I wish El Paso would embrace it and use it all over and make it our calling card.

Thank you...actually, Jakarta isn't so pretty, it's a border town but in S.E. Asia. However, safer & very nice people! But once you get out of Jakarta & into the jungle, it is the most beautiful place one could ever imagine!

I wish El Paso would adopt that style & make it's trademark also! Cheers!

I thought 79907 was rowdy when I lived in El Paso (I grew up in 79924).

I think 79912 has some housing projects off South Mesa Hills near Johnson Elementary School. Somebody was lumping Johnson in with Aoy Elementary (an old-time barrio school) and Wainwright Elementary (a now-closed school in a run-down part of Northeast) in an interview I read once.

When we moved here the advice we received was to live on the westside (79912)...mainly because traffic to where we work (near UTEP) is not as bad. Also, we bought based on schools so we paid more for our home to be near Franklin/Coronado, Hornedo, Kohlberg/Polk/Tippin which annually receive good ratings. Now there is Brown MS and a new MS and ES opening on High Ridge somewhere. We are not "rich" by any means, but we live in a neighborhood of mainly dual career professionals. We shop at Target and in the bargain racks like most people. Pretty middle class by most standards. We do like some homes in the Franklin Hills and Park Hills areas, but too costly for our blood, purchase price and taxes. It's only after we moved in that we heard how folks perceive the Westside. Perception. If you are a transplant from either coast, like we are, almost every house in EP, even for $500,000 looks like a bargain. Maybe this is why you see so many transplants on the Westside; they sold a house somewhere else for tons of $ (before the crash) and are able to buy a big house outright.

That's what I think is pretty funny. People in the west side of El Paso aren't for the most part especially rich, most live just like Americans live in other cities. There are a few very rich, some who are doing okay, many who are two income couples working hard for what they have but a lot of houses on the west side are simply middle class, and there are plenty of houses and apartments that are below middle class.

Also while some of the homes are big, the yards tend to be quite tiny, in some parts of the country the lot size would be much more generous when you're looking at a $400,000 home.

To actually see what houses are available for whatever price and to compare zip codes go to REALTOR.com - Real Estate Listings & Homes For Sale and search by zip code. I think in just about every zip code, there are homes or condos less than $100,000 and some that are more. There are only 2 houses over $1 million available in 79912, but if you like a bit of yard and space between you and your neighbors and be on the west side, you'd have to try 79922 or 79932.
