I was a hostage in a holdup at the Teacher's Fed. Credit Union many years ago. Also, my mother was carjacked several years ago as well. So, that gets me off right away. When I was called for Grand Jury, that was scary as they just drew names out of the hat. I really didn't want to have to worry about 6 months commitment.

If the crime/suspect is similar, probably a bias??

that may be a reason not to get picked by the attorneys during voir dire to sit on the panel, but that's not an excuse for not showing up. Remember, you have civil jury trials too -- a dispute over a contract, for instance, where being a victim of a crime would have no relevance.

To answer the OP's question (from several years back), El Paso County is quite serious about jury duty, and if you don't show up they will issue a contempt warrant, where you have to show up before a judge and grovel, and pay a fine.

Update, I had to go to jury selection yesterday. Because of some "problems " , the group I was in ( 150 people) had to remain in Liberty Hall for most of the day. It took forever to do the questioning and explaining the case and the statutes with that 3rd rate PA system. Around 4 PM , they did move us to the court house lobby which we then waited for another hour and a half. Finally , about 6:30 PM, they picked the 12 and one alternate. It was the worst I have ever been through. As explained in my previous posts, I never get picked. I will be happy when I can get to the age where I am old enough to opt out quickly.

I don't care all that much for jury duty, but I will do it. I guess you can call me a goodie-two-shoes, but like Brother said, how would I feel knowing that the people who have my freedom in their hands are just gonna rush through because they don't want to be there. I firmly believe what goes around comes around. Karma can be sweet, but she can be a witch too! IJS...
