Hello everyone! I am a recent college grad (I'm 23) and am considering taking a job in El Paso and would be starting next month. Can anyone tell me what the best areas to live in are? I grew up in the Dallas area so this move would be a drastic change, but I'm up for it. I'm wanting to live in a hip and trendy area that will allow me to walk to shops and restaurants. I want a one bedroom (maybe in a gated community?) in which I'd spend less than $1,000/month (including all bills) and it must be in a safe area.

Can you give me ideas as to where I could live?

Welcome to El Paso, Texan#1.

Threads like yours get created almost a weekly basis here. All the regulars of this forum (including myself) are pretty firm in their views of El Paso. Some love it and some hate it.

Some will tell you that hip and trendy places don't exist here. Others will point out exactly where those places are. My best advise is get out as much as possible once you are here and explore the city.

I love the east side but based on what you said, I think the west side is best suited for you. I don't think you are going to find everything you mentioned in one place though. The westside has a nice mall, an outlet mall, and a ton of night spots.

Also, you might want to check out the following links.

If you were moving to Austin, Texas then I would tell you try a loft in downtown or the new community where the old Airport once stood.

El Paso's downtown has not caught up with the rest of Texas. I hear Paul Foster is trying to build some living areas there now. Not sure where or what the status of those projects are at this time.

You can try renting a house dirt cheap near the UTEP campus. Some home owners have renovated some of the old homes near the university.

I am sure someone that lives in ELP can provide better advice.

I am curious though...what kinda of job you taking in ELP?

mistabinks, I will definitely look into the westside. I just want to be in a new(ish) apartment in a safe area. (gated, garage/carport, and close to retail would be ideal).

Smooth from ELP, I would be looking into lofts in Austin if I moved there. I like areas in which I can walk around and meet people. Oh, and I'd be taking a job in retail management.

Well have fun in ELP. Please do keep us updated on your transistion to West Texas. Sounds like your mind is made up. So dont pay attention to the ones that will try to talk you out of it.

ELP has some of the friendlist folk around. And I consider ELP the Mexican Food Capital of the World. Stay away from Juarez!! Yes the westside is ideal for you. New outlet malls in that part of town too. Beautiful view of the Franklin Mountains. Somehow you feel closer to them in the Westside.

Good Luck!!

Im a big fan of the North East side of town.. but what you discribe to me is West Side all the way.

By the way they are speaking of me trying to talk you out of it. Hey you have the biggest part of moving here beat.. the JOB! So I say go for it if this is what you really want and the job is something you really want to do.. El Paso is not all bad.

The West side though from what you asked for seems to be your best bet. I would not say Trendy as what your thinking Trendy is.. but hey El Paso has always had its own trends and stye. But the walking part I dont see happening to often. El Paso loves it cars.

The East side has some nice areas that you may also like Way out with Nice Apratments, and Townhomes, and even walking and shopping near by.

Good luck, and Welcome to El Paso.

P.S. Your question came in just before my reply.. But Yes there are in fact Places like that here in El Paso.

I myself do NOT like the East/WEst sides of EP..when I was growing up..the west side was reserved for the rich people and the East side was not even developed..I like my central part of town where I grew up, went to Burges/Austin,,,and has alot of history..If my father talks me into moving back..I am going to move back downtown..or close ot it..

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Muhnay, do you happen to know any of the names of some of urban apartment buildings?

Also, what is ya'lls best area mall? the most upscale?

I had no idea you have no city or county taxes in El Paso either.. I just read up on that!
