They also have enough capital to do copious amounts of research into where to locate any of their new stores.

Smaller chains and independent folks are much more likely to take a chance on an unproven area.

Given the current economic situation, right now isn't exactly the best time to be opening new upscale food chains anyway.

Not necessarily.

What I was getting at was that a larger chain who already has locations in most, if not all of the major cities/areas will then move onto secondary markets when expanding.

What upscale food chain are you referring to??

I'm saying a Morton's or Ruth Chris Steakhouse probably wouldn't open up right now given the market conditions nationally. People just aren't as willing to dish out their disposable income on something they can make/cook themselves.

Even Starbucks is struggling as people are figuring out how much money they can save by making their own coffee at home.

While I make decent money, I'd still rather grill my own steaks at home and pocket the $70-$100 difference in doing it myself versus going to a fancy steakhouse. In a year or two perhaps people will be more willing to reopen their wallets, but right now ain't that time.....

Besides, the area would benefit much more by H-E-B or United coming to town and giving folks more options for groceries than it would from having an expensive national steakhouse setting up shop downtown.

Oh I wish they would open a few Super HEB's here, they would give Wally World a run for the money.

I totally agree - I'd love to see an H-E-B open here. Once the 2 Lomarts closed, much to my disappointment, I'd love having choices besides Albertsons, Big 8 and Walmart.

Any updates on this? I haven't noticed any changes going on at the train depot. This was supposed to open by August or September.

I was wondering the same thing. I believe it got scrapped because of financing or something like that. Big plans shouldn't be announced until they are final...that way our hopes won't get dashed.
