Wish we could get a Corner Bakery on the westside. Love that place. Hey! Are there any doughnut shops left on the westside? Southern Maid(?) and Dunkin' closed and I haven't seen any other out here other then getting them at Albertson's.

I know your full of good news USMC, which can be a breath of fresh air, but consider how many business are booming across the area; now consider a lot of these same establishments empty in a a few months, or a few years, I'd rather look at virgin, undeveloped land, than overdeveloped vacant commercial space. I think we have too many strip malls, and the building has been too robust, too fast. I love undeveloped desert landscape!

The most wonderful thing about El Paso though....it's lack of tacky dunkin donuts shops!

One thing that caught my eye in USMC's link was that they are building a brand new large apartment complex on George Dieter and Pellicano (Currently an ugly vacant lot) as we need more in el paso as the Ft. Bliss expansion will fill alot of them up and competition and choice is always a good thing. Plus not everyone can afford to buy a house especially those twenty somethings just starting out.

Being one of those 20 somethings I agree with you. The choices already seem a bit slim for nice apartments that aren't in the $900 or $1000 category on the West side.

Once I narrow down the choices to pet friendly and washer and dryer hook ups I'm left with only a handful.

Read Newspaper Tree about susie BYRD tesifying in Austin. The key statements were, she admits the majority of soldiers are going to rent NOT buy houses, therefore there will a bigger demand for multi-dwelling unit-code for apartments. Also that the surge will drive up the cost of renting thus hurting EP families. Something we have been telling housing developers all along. But they just build housing developement after housing developement as though theyre in denial.

Not good news but if we slow the current trend, we can still come out alright. There are other issues but I will save that for the political page.

LUPLOR THIS IS NOT DIRECTED DIRECTLY TO YOU!!!!!!!

What I find interesting about your post is that the "surge will drive up the cost of renting thus hurting EP families"...

what I find curious bout it is that El Paso is NOT unique in the sense of being a "military city", however I find that on these message boards, El Paso *does* have a sense of being "unique" in some.........magical way LOL. What I mean is, think about EVERY city that has a military base. There are A LOT. And, in every one of those cities, there are us military families needing houses and wanting jobs.

But no where before have I ever heard a reapeated "theme" that we (the military soldiers and families) are "taking away from" or "hurting" the people of that particular city. Most cities just take what they can from us, meaning use it to their advantage. I swear sometimes i feel guilty and like a "big meaner" for relocating to Fort Bliss ~ cuz I am possibly "taking" a house from a long time el paso resident! Or that Im putting one of their kids out of school or taking a job!!! LOL its just weird to me.

To me, its either a "sign" of the economy in El Paso ~ or its some sort of strange phenomanon (sp) of El Paso'ans. Considering that all of america has a bad economy, I have to go with the strange phenomanon lol.

Can i just nicely and politely point out that us army soldiers and families are American Citizens and have every right to live anywhere in the US just as everyone else does??? And that El Paso is IN the United States, so there for free game?? AND MORE IMPORTANTLY THAT UNCLE SAM MAKES US GO TO FORT BLISS!!!! or where EVER we are being stationed? Its not like we have a lot of choice in the matter :0)

THIS IS NOT DIRECTED AT ANYONE IN PARTICULAR ~ JUST AN OBSERVATION. I REALLY REALLY DO NOT MEAN TO OFFEND, JUST BRING UP SOME GOOD DISCUSSION

I guess I jsut don't understand why El Paso is so resistant to us, when other cities are either indifferent, or welcome the money they can make off us. Have you ever seen the parts of cities that DIRECTLY border a military base? Businesses that thrive on the military! Granted im not talking about upscale businesses, but still ~ money is money, right?

Don't feel that way MrsRobinson, the vast majority of El Pasoans are really glad that Fort Bliss will be welcoming new soldiers and families. They know that evenghough it will bring some minor pains, the overall outlook will be very, very beneficial to this community. The people that actually know a little bit about economics know that a heavy presence of a federal or military complex can be big generators of economic activity historically. The heavy naval shipshards in southern California and Virginia, the 5 Air Force bases in San Antonio, Sandia Labs & Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque and I could go on and on. The growth of Fort Bliss along the new medical school will be a tremendous economic engine for the El Paso economy. The people that are not very happy about this are afraid of the growth that this region is showing and wished for the days when El Paso was a smaller more laid back town. Growth and economic progress are inevitable.
