Well then I assume you miss-understood my AZTLAN question. There is an agenda there for some, and when you had stated that people of other colors just pick up and move away when Mexicans move in, I was then asking that if we don't stay we are helping that agenda, right? I am not sure how else to ask it without making it sound as if I buy into the whole thing. I don't.

I did'nt miss understand your question about Aztlan, these are communist or socialist groups that dont have any idea what they are up against, and this situation where people of color pick up and move away, it's only logical, when once white dominated neighborhoods had their first people of color residents move in, what use to be the old white saying Muhnay? does ( there goes the neigborhood) sound familiar?
Wether you choose to stay or not is totally up to you, and it dont really matter wether you buy into it or not, I think theres more to the story, but your not going to tell it all or the real truth.

Why should anyone move away at all just because people are more different than you?

I see it that way: You can benefit from it. It is up to you.

In El Paso you have a chance to live with people of all colors in a neighborhood. They learn about my way I do from theirs. In other cities you have chinatown, russiatown, japanesetown, black ghettos...... Do we have this in El Paso? It might escaped my attention then, I haven't been all over the place yet.

I am from oversea and pretty much German as you know all cliches about it. I haven't met one hispanic or black here who would avoid me for it because I meet people open minded, friendly and I'm interested and I listen. Maybe people separate themselves sometimes because they are afraid of the other kinds. I am not shy and walk over to people to ask them how they are today and always get a nice answer and have a little talk....

I also don't have a problem to say right in face, that I think it is not polite to speak spanish while I am around and don't understand it. People apologize then, they just didn't think about it and then they speak english, which I appreciate. I already speak 5 languages and spanish is on my list to do.

My point is, it depends on you. In Germany we have broken down a wall peacefully and even though some walls are just in our heads, you can do so too. In Germany many people still think they are the race of the world but travel for vacation to Spain or Italy which is bigotry. I am a foreigner myself as soon as I go to other countries and I want to be treated nicely too.
We have a saying, that the way you shout into a forest the way the echo comes out.

I had a little chat with some people in Alamogordo at the air show last weekend. They told me that Alamogordo never has been really NM, it has always been more Texas. So the U.S. should sell back El Paso to Mexico and get Alamogordo to Texas in trade. I was speechless and I also forgot to ask what NM would get for it it seems to get away empty handed *gg*. If there wouldn't be other problems as borders and who belongs to what country. We're all making buisness together across the planet, internet is for some reason world wide web, we should get along with each other.

It would be nice and probably naive to live all together, with a bit German discipline at work, a good cup of french coffee, mexican lean back, chinese food, japanese technology, italian wine, black gospel music and so on - in a very nice american way and country.

It is not easy to explain my point in a (for me) different language, so I hope you get me right

Why not just relocate to Mexico which is already Mexicanized? If becoming more like Mexico is the goal -- then why not just go to that country instead?

Mexican Americans are not Mexicans by the way -- I know people whose ancestors lived here in this country from way back -- and they aren't like Mexicans -- and often aren't for the Mexicanization of this country. In fact -- many so-called hispanics are very pro-America and are very Americanized.

What's funny -- I knew a Chicano guy who grew up in the Midwest. He spent a couple days here and totally hated it. He asked me how the hell can I stand living here and why wouldn't I prefer living up north.

That's why it can be interesting -- many people come here and like it, or they like it "enough" -- many people don't like it at all here -- but it's hard to know what it's based on. I even knew a guy from Mexico City that came here and hated it here. He hated the way Spanish is spoken here for one -- he said if this is the way they're going to speak Spanish, they should just forget it and try to learn some English. But -- then I know others from Mexico City that like it just fine here.

The matter is that it is more Mexicanized now than it was before and for some of us that grew up in El Paso when one could remember that if you wanted to see a Mexican from accross the border you would have to drive accross the river into Juarez to see one, at the same time driving around town if you ever saw a car with Chihuahua license plates that was not very often you could actually count them.

Now times have change and they have change alot more than was expected and it's getting pretty crowded, not just in El Paso but everywhere else as well, the immigration patterns have changed where illegals are moving to where one would least expect like in such places as New England and the east coast and other parts of the country.

I find them to be making bold choices to be in places where they are not welcome yet they keep moving and nothing is stoping them and foremost,it more than irritates someone thats never seen a Mexican let alone finding out they are in the country illegal is more than enough to set off racial tones.

Now in El Paso wether they are there legal or illegal they are there, and more than likely they are there to stay, I'm fine with them as long as they are here legally and came in the country the right way, someone here sugested that I move to Mexico and why should I?

The Southwest will always be a place where my ancestors once inhabited all to themselfs way before the arrival of the borders with imaginary lines with chain link barb wire fences, if someone is not enforcing the law, it's not my problem.

You guys need to just turn the other cheek.. all the slap happiness you have enjoyed on each other is getting tiresome.

Mexicans forget that they are also transplants.. how many Mayans do you know.. there were Mayans and other natives in Mexico before there were Mexicans.. So when these Mexicans start to scream go home ******.. I'm all like sure thing.. I like Scotland. But you need to go home too.. try Spain. Or even France... I mean practice what you preach amigo.

Since I am a 1/4 American Indian, I can say shut up this is 1/4 more my land than yours. heh heh.. ok maybe thats just as silly as the crap posted so far. But I figured what the heck.. you two cant have all the fun. =)

Lightbulb The "Mexicanization" of El Paso

As an old gringo with two decades in El Paso, I'll weigh in here.

Sure, folks fresh from Mexico will tend to be very Mexican. Why wouldn't they be? And the first generation American-born Mexican-Americans seem to have strong ties to Mexico, also. But their education and interests in sports, music, styles, tend to mainstream American.

By and large, American-born Latinos seem a lot more American than Mexican, from what I've seen. Heck, I've met LOTS of 2nd and 3rd generation American-born Hispanics here who don't speak much Spanish, at all.

Those who come to America become Americans. Prepare to be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
