Celebrating Easter

‘Celebration of Life’
-- LifeGate Church, 10555 Edgemere, will host its 6th annual Easter Weekend exhibition of worship through the arts April 10-11. The exhibition features people from all aspects of the performing and visual arts. All art is family friendly, though not necessarily religious in nature. Hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. Information: 593-1122 or LifeGateElPaso.us.
All Christian artists are invited to display their art or perform, with advance notice.

Easter Egg Hunt and Spring Bash -- The 9th annual family event, sponsored by Westside Community Church, is noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at Francisco Delgado Park, on Imperial Ridge behind Franklin High School. The event includes more than 4,000 eggs, jumping balloons, face painting, an appearance by the Easter Bunny, free food and live music. Egg hunt begins at noon with prizes for kids. Easter Eggstravaganza -- The annual family event is noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at Biggs Park, Biggs Army Air Field. This year’s theme is “It’s a Green Thing.” Bring plastic or paper egg cartons to make recycled to take all recyclable products. Six thousand eggs made from recycled plastic will be given out. Egg hunts begin at noon for ages 1-3; 1 p.m. for ages 4-7 and 2 p.m. for ages 8 and older. Admission is free. Information: 588-8247.

Northeaster Parade -- Thousands of people are expected to watch the 30th annual parade, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at the corner of Hercules and Diana and continues 1 1/2 miles along Diana to North Park Mall. Registration is 8 to 9:30 a.m. No entry fee for non-profit groups. Information: 751-6964.
The parade features Northeast high school bands, scout troops, car clubs, church groups and dancers. The parade is sponsored by the Northeast Civic Leaders Council.

Community Easter Sunrise Service -- The 35th annual inter-denominational service is at 7 a.m. Sunday, April 12, at Desmond Corcoran Park, at Rodman and Veny Webb streets, in Horizon City. Presented by the Kiwanis Club of Horizon City. Information: 543-5761.

Itzhak Perlman -- El Paso Pro-Musica presents the world’s reigning virtuoso violinist at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 6, at The Plaza Theatre. Tickets: $45-$125. (Ticketmaster). Information: 833-9400.
The renowned violinist’s recordings appear regularly on best-seller charts and he has been the recipient of 15 Grammy awards and four Emmy awards. One of Perlman’s proudest achievements was his collaboration with film score composer John Williams in Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award winning film, “Schindler’s List” in which he performed the violin solos. He will also perform his works from “Memoirs of A Geisha.”

Peak Music Festival -- The event featuring performances by area middle and high school bands and orchestras is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, at The Plaza Theatre. Admission is free. Information: 534-0689.

Rubin Center -- UTEP’s Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts is next to Sun Bowl Stadium (off Dawson Drive). Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Sesame Street Live ‘Elmo’s Green Thumb’ -- The Sesame Street Live friends’ annual Easter week shows are April 9-12 at the Abraham Chavez Theatre.Presented by VEE Corporation.
Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday, 2 and 7 p.m. Friday, 10:30, 2 and 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 and 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Elmo has raised his sunflower, Sunny, from a seed, but his floral friend has outgrown the flower pot. Elmo and friends find Big Bird’s garden the ideal place for Sunny to flourish and grow but they are too excited to wait. Rather than let Sunny follow nature’s course, Abby Cadabby, Sesame Street’s fairy-in-training, casts a spell to make Sunny grow causing Elmo and all of his friends shrink instead. While Abby searches for just the right words to reverse the spell, Elmo, Zoe, Telly and friends explore Big Bird’s garden from a smaller perspective and learn some big lessons about patience, overcoming their fears and appreciating the role that each creature plays in our ecosystem. Features high-tech stagecraft, cleverly written script, and familiar music such as “Ladybug Picnic,” “Inch by Inch” and “I Love Trash.”

Avenged Sevenfold -- The hard rock band performs at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at NMSU’s Pan American Center in Las Cruces, with guests Buckcherry, Papa Roach and Rev Theory. Tickets: $39.75, plus service charges. (Ticketmaster).
The Huntington Beach (Calif.)-based band’s hits include “Burn It Down,” “Bat Country,” “Beast and the Harlot,” “Afterlife,” “Dear God,” and Almost Easy.”

Los Tigres del Norte -- The popular norteño band performs at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at El Paso County Coliseum, 4100 Paisano. Tickets: $37.50. (Ticketmaster)
Los Tigres del Norte have told of the Mexican experience both north and south of the border in over 500 songs and more than 55 albums that have received Gold and Platinum status. They have appeared in more than 14 films and have sold more than 32 million records worldwide.

Dinopalooza 2009 -- Insights: El Paso Science Museum, 505 N. Santa Fe, will host its first ever fundraising music festival starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 11, in the museum’s parking area. Several local bands are featured including Edgemere, Voyeur, Gruis Spectra, Avindale, Cigarrettes After Sex, Fever and the Hottins, The Dozal Brothers, Every Star I See, Alpha Better, I Universe, I Hate The Remix, Fatter Than Nancy, Trees To Metropolis, The Westbound Outlaw Band, Panthers vs. Tigers, By All Means Captain and Soviet Music Police. March Madness symphony fundraiser -- The annual fundraiser benefiting the El Paso Symphony Orchestra’s education and outreach programs is Monday, April 6, at the El Paso Country Club, featuring the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship finals on several wide-screen televisions.
Games begin about 7 p.m., pre-game activities at 6 p.m. Live and silent auctions and raffles will be held before the game and during halftime. Cost: $100. Information/reservations: 532-3776 or epso.org.
The 4th annual March Madness Golf Tournament is earlier Monday. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., lunch at 11 a.m. and 18 holes of golf at 1 p.m. Cost: $1,000, team of four (includes green fees for a team of four and four individual tickets to the dinner and game). Hole sponsorships available.

‘So You Think You Can Sing’ benefit -- Children’s Grief Center will host a fundraising gala dinner Thursday, April 9, at Coronado Country Club, 1044 Broadmoor. Cocktails served at 6 p.m., dinner served at 7 p.m. followed by a karaoke contest with local celebrities. A silent auction is also held. Sponsored by El Paso Electric Company and Western Refining. Proceeds benefit the center’s ongoing grief support and educational programs.

Northeaster Pancake Breakfast -- Franklin Mountains Rotary Club will host a fundraising breakfast before, during and after the annual Northeaster Parade 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at Highland Presbyterian Church, 9210 Dyer. UTEP Track Invitational -- Top-ranked university track teams and other athletes will compete in the annual all-day track meet begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at Kidd Field, UTEP. Get With Literacy 8K -- The 2nd annual 8K race and 2-mile fun run and walk is 8 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at Western Playland Amusement Park in Sunland Park. Proceeds benefit Partners in Literacy and Lady Nets youth basketball organization. Medals awarded to top three male and female finishers in all age groups. Trophies awarded to overall male and female finishers. Refreshments and door prizes offered after the race, and all participants receive a Euro-style runner’s hat. Cloudcroft Easter Events -- The mountain community of Cloudcroft will hold its annual Easter Egg hunt and parade Saturday, April 11. Easter in the Park -- The annual egg hunt is Saturday, April 11, at Washington Park in Alamogordo. Area youth are invited to bring their basket and join the hunt. Prizes offered for egg hunters in various age categories. The annual parade begins at 10 a.m. at City Hall and ends at Washington Park for the egg hunts. Admission is free. Two English Shakespearean actors find themselves so down on their luck that they are performing scenes from Shakespeare on the Moose Lodge circuit in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. When they hear that an old lady in York, Pa. is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. When they get to York they find out that the relatives aren’t nephews, but nieces.
