My wife and I are strongly considering moving to a city in West TX. I am a dentist and the general area would be good as far as need for dentists.

We have children and our main concern is finding a place that is family friendly. We are considering any city with a population greater than 20k.

Any personal experience in different cities? Advice on how I should look into different areas?

Thanks ahead of time.

Depends what you mean by "West TX". Some consider anything west of Fort Worth and San Antonio as west Texas.
If that's the case then you'd be looking at Abilene, Midland-Odessa, San Angelo, Lubbock, Amarillo, and El Paso.
El Paso is the largest and fastest growing of that lot - so I suspect the better prospects for a new dental practice. The oil field cities (Midland-Odessa...) are boom and bust - currently bust.

I hasten to point out that the closer to the border, the more likely of competition from the dental clinics on the Mexican side. It is "Big Business" for those clinics that charge a fraction of what dentist's on the U.S. side charge for the same services.

Yes, the cities you mentioned are the main ones I am looking into. I'm more interested in purchasing a current practice so the growth of a city wouldn't be as important as if I were starting from scratch. I am mostly interested in the family life aspects-raising kids.

I love El Paso, but know that culturally, geographically, and climate-wise it's a totally different Texas than the other cities.
Monarch Dental on Mesa is run a dentist from Brooklyn who bought the existing practice.

El paso is the only city in West Texas I'd consider.

Why do you recommend Midland over other west Texas cities?

Abilene is a great city for families. Wylie ISD (not to be confused with the Wylie in DFW) serves the southern portion of the city, and is an academically-sound district (highly ranked within the state) with lots of new homes. Abilene ISD has some good schools as well. Abilene may be a bit quiet on the night-life scene, but there are tons of activities for families. Hope this helps - let me know if you have any other questions!
