No, I wouldn't do that. Then too much air escapes. You want to control the flow of cool air. The original poster mentioned it gets hot upstairs. So opening a window upstairs would create a flow of cool air to the second floor. Opening too many windows would defeat that purpose. I would have two windows cracked at the most.

Oh.......ok. So, two windows at most, does that mean you'd do one upstairs, and one down stairs at the same time? (sorry i dont' mean to ask dumb questions!!!)

Never a dumb question.

I live alone, so I only crack a window or a door in the room I am in. Easy enough for me. For families, you might want to crack open on each floor. These are just guidelines. Some houses were built with too small or too big of a cooler. Their are a lot of factors. Obviously if your house is too big for the cooler you have, you are going to have trouble. Again, this is something some would be quick to blame on El Paso climate when it is another problem all together. I would not worry too much about it. El Paso is a change for you but it is not as extreme as most would make it out to seem. For the most part, it is a dry heat here. It is slowly changing but it is still overall pretty dry here. Your swamp cooler will probably be fine.

I usually open all my windows or at least one on each side of the house and don't need an air conditioner at all. There almost always is a nice breeze and if not I have ceiling fans.
