Hey everyone! I am planning a little spring vacation (my southwest tour: run El Paso Marathon on March 7th 2010; then head west to run the Los Angeles Marathon on March 21st). I've never been to either place. Coming from Duluth, Minnesota, I've never even seen the 'other' borderland and am very interested in checking it out.

Since I am single, traveling alone on a budget with no car, what would you suggest on lodging? For those who are familiar with the marathon (I'm guessing it begins downtown) are there hostels or anything like that downtown that are reasonably priced that you know of? I'm flying from Duluth - El Paso and probably busing it to Phoenix to spend a few days and then onto Los Angeles. Other than that, is El Paso pretty much like any other large US City? Is there much to see on the Mexican side? I couldn't find the map of the marathon course; I wonder if the marathon crosses into Mexico at all (like the Detroit - Windsor Marathon is partly in the US and partly in Canada)...

Any advice for me would be much appreciated!

Last year the Marathon started downtown and ran up the west side of town -see PDF below. It does not go into Mexico. El Paso is very much a suburban/car oriented city. There is an old downtown business section with office towers that gets deserted after 5pm and on weekends and also a downtown shopping district that's busy during the day & caters in large part to Mexicans crossing the border. There are many hotels downtown with the lower cost ones (ie the classic Gateway Hotel) catering to Mexicans visiting the US. There is also a newer Travelodge downtown. Without a car you might want to stay closer to Kern Place/UTEP for nightlife but I can't think of any low cost accommodations in that immediate area.

Reviews of Gardner Hotel – El Paso Hostel in El Paso

I don't think there are many, you might want to check that one out, conveniently located downtown, walking (and running) distance from the border and bus stations.
