I see him quite often on the elevators, and when I ask him how he is, he always replies "Blessed". And El Paso is "blessed" to have him for a mayor. Those of us who work in the trenches at cityhall see and hear "all". John Cook has earned the respect of the trenchworkers at cityhall. Count your blessings, John Cook is honest, hardworking and patient, and thoughtful in his decision making. Keep him in public office as long as you can in whatever capacity that you can.

BUT OF COURSE HE IS A NICE GUY, HE GETS PAID TO DO NOTHING, I WOULD BE HAPPY TOO AND I WOULD SAY HI TO EVERYBODY OUT THERE, NEXT TIME YOU SEE HIM TELL HIM TO GET RID OF WEEDS ALL OVER TOWN AND TELL HIM TO USE OUR MONEY TO BUY MORE STREET LIGHTS AND TELL HIM TO MAKE SURE TRASH TRUCKS COME IN EVERY TIME THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO!

My biggest complaint about El Paso, is the ridiculously high property taxes. I'd vote for any candidate who is truly committed to lowering them, or at least putting a freeze on them.

Not all Irish - many are from the Celtic tribes. I think some Dutch are "anglo-saxon" but that's about it.

Most people in the USA are not anglo-saxon so they shoudn't be called anglos. Besides it's a racist slur word so just call Americans "Americans" or "estadounidenses".

Yes really -- I'd pick a purple mayor who would do that over any other color.

1979 El Paso and Texas are about average for property tax. Try New York State where a $400k building had a $23,078 annual tax. The worst is Detroit where a $4000 house may also have a $4000 annual price tag.

Zorro obviously didn' t pick up on the subtleties of the argument nor did malamute- I will just let them argue with each other.

Other cities provide more city services at lower rates and usually have higher wages. So the tax rate is absurd here in EP. One example, I used to pay 33.00 a QUARTER for water-sewer-trash pick up. Trash pick up was TWICE a week, no limit and the only thing not taken, were toxics. They also had bulk pick up days and much BETTER recycle service.

By the way, for the water, no scheduled days for washing cars or watering yard. We had a large grass yard, plants and garden. NO ROCKS. What we have is apoorly managed city.

So why did I move here? Better weather and the EP uniqueness. I will do my best for a better city and government, as I LIVE here now. Most people want to be like some other city, so move to the city of your dreams. I did, I moved here.

Yes, but you also live in a desert with a limited water supply.
Water restrictions have to be taken.
We also have to harvest water differently than most cities.

We have the world's largest and most modern desalination plant. Didnt they pitch the rock yard solution to save water but raised rates anyway because those very properties now have run off. And the trash-recycle fees. I could give many examples but I believe the point is made.

The city is not being managed properly.

lulpor be specific what services does Detroit provide that El Paso doesn't. On houses costing $5000 the tax may be $5000 a year. Go for it Luplor tell me what Detroit provides for the money that El Paso doesn't.

Here let me help you .. because you're going to need it lol

Schools??? Detroit has about the worst in the country - many are closing down and the entire system is in receivership ( hint so don't say schools)

Police Protection??? Detroit's police are notoriously understaffed and indifferent. Maybe I posted the story of the man in Detroit who witnessed a murder and went down to the police station to report it. They told him "wait in line" after a few hours he got tired and took a bus to Toledo and reported it ( hint don't say police)

Trash collection?? - lol each street collects its own trash it just gets dumped and sits there.

Go for it !
