No real spill over from Juarez - IMHO because crimes in the US are seriously investigated while in Juarez you can get away with anything - cops can only respond & don't have the resources to investigate or follow-up. The crime is also on the Juarez side because it's a fight between cartels to control the Juarez gateway to the US. Once in the US the drugs get shipped to warehouses for distribution. A recent TV show said that Phoenix is a major warehouse and distribution center to the rest of the states.

The murder malamute referred to was an innocent kid driving alone from San Antonio to California. He stopped overnight to sleep at the Anthony Welcome Center. The murderers were caught and are 3 teens (15,16,18) from Anthony & part of a Las Cruces gang.

Details of Anthony murder revealed - Las Cruces Sun-News
The three teenagers - had been waiting for a half hour, with the express plans to "jack" the first person they saw. Orozco tapped on Espinoza's window to ask for a cigarette -When Espinoza rolled down the window, Ramirez walked up with the .22-caliber pistol-grip rifle. "Brace yourself," Ramirez said. "Give me all your money." Espinoza said he didn't have any money and if they wanted to rob him, "you're going to have to shoot me," Orozco said. Ramirez did so - once in the head and three times in the body.

I just worry about my 2 little girls, not so much for myself. I don't want to ask relatives about El Paso because I know they are biased. If I did move down there I would be related to probably 1/8th of the city.

My mother in law was miss juarez then later miss el paso back in the 50's. had 9 kids and each of those 9 kids had kids etc... you get the idea. The family is really thick down there and probably see el paso a lot different than I would. Although I did like it when I was there, I am just not familar with all the other stuff that goes on.

I think the crime on the New Mexico side of Anthony is a major reason why they decided to incorporate: they didn't think the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department was helping them enough with that.

I remember in the Seventies they had doctors, lawyers, car dealers and other rich people living in Mountain Park (which is in 79904 along with the Triangle; Mountain Park was zoned to Irvin back then, and the Irvin and Canyon Hills kids I knew called it Snob Hill). Is that still an upscale neighborhood?

I believe it is -- there are upscale neighborhoods in just about every zip code I think - nice expensive homes and all that but some zip codes just have more of that. Also every zip code has the more ghetto spots too - but some have a little more than others.

El Paso is quite safe, but the recent murder by those Anthony people, one article said they belong to the norteno gang, is a bit unnerving because we're really not used to innocent people being killed for no reason. That kind of thing is unusual here in this town because most murder here is between gang members or is domestic violence, almost never involving an innocent stranger.

Think twice about pulling into a rest stop around here I guess, that's kind of good advice most everywhere but really here that kind of thing has not been a problem, we don't think about violence much, so we're probably quite lax on certain precautions. I know I wouldn't pull into an lonely rest stop at night in other parts of the country but around here I probably would have.

The Anthony murder didn't get any national attention. If there was a rest stop murder in California it would have been all over the news. A fire in El Paso gets no attention but a smaller fire in the Bronx would have live breaking national news coverage from 10 different traffic copters.

True -- I wonder why? It's as though the life of the innocent 20 year old traveler really doesn't matter. No big deal, it's not news. I've read a lot more in national news of other people killed in rest areas but this one just seems to be swept under the rug for some reason. Just forget about the life of the victim, he didn't count.

I live in the 79904 Mountain Park area and yes, IMHO, it's still an upscale area. Granted, as in every neighborhood, there are neglected homes and variances in median income. The high school for the area is now Chapin, not Irvin.

Asking "where is the best area/zip code to live" is a loaded question and rightly so, as atrabilius posted earlier. I've lived in all areas of the city over the last 35 years and wouldn't trade where I now live for any other part of the city. So, IMHO, it's all subjective.

Careful about statistics - 79902 may have the 3rd highest income but those figures are distorted by the large student population. Without them it would be much higher. Students give an area some life. Also 79902 has many older people, they may not be working and show much income but they may have a high net worth.
The richest areas are not always the best or most fun places to live. I like all of 79902 from the El Paso High area which is really quiet considering how close it is to everything - all the way to Kern and Sunset Heights.

You can use zillow.com or trulia.com to get info on housing prices in these ZIP codes.

WTF??? How can a family making 65k a year afford those homes or even a home muchless? I'm not counting the .001% that live in the country club compared to the rest of the West Side. I make more than 65k (have no kids) and I can't even afford a 200k+ home.

Something has to give or there's alot of drug dealers not doing taxes or people living way outside their means.
