Auto thefts have dropped in El Paso, Texas. This beautiful oasis just keeps getting better and better. Kudos to the EPPD for doing an outstanding job.

New national rankings reflect El Paso's dropping auto theft rate even as police argue that the rating could still be better.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau last week released its annual city rankings of the nation's "hot spots" for stolen vehicles in 2009.

El Paso was ranked No. 27, an improvement from the previous year's No. 17 ranking.

Another Texas border city, Laredo, received the dubious No. 1 position as the nation's auto-theft capital. Albuquerque was No. 10.

Auto thefts in El Paso have been dropping for the past three years and are down about 6 percent this year, said police Lt. Marc Medina of the Auto Theft Task Force.

Do you think maybe the times are catching up with car theives? It's not as easy just to mangle the ignition switch, computers and such. Also, most newer high end cars come with GPS built into the car, so it will be even harder to take one's vehicle without someone knowing exactly where it is. 'Not taking credit away from EPPD, BTW.

At least they leave the car behind! A family member works for an Acura dealership, and he said the biggest repair that comes in is for catalytic converter replacemet. Evidently those are high dollar items because of the platinum they contain. For the Acuras and Hondas, it's about a $600-800.00 part, plus labor.

I think the cartels caught up with a lot of them. Look how many people killed in used car lots and "mechanic" shops in Juarez.

Another article came out today stating auto thefts are down the first half of this year compared to the first half of 2009. There was also a recent article about the (already low) murder rate going down. Good news across the board. Kudos to Chief Allen and the EPPD.

And of course this is where the usual suspects will make comments about the bullets hitting city hall and possibly a comment about the "gay incident" at Chicos.

No, I just think it's hilarious how people are satisfied with being able to keep the cars they own and murders not happening in front of their house. Low standards of city quality.

But the majority of other cities can't claim that.

agreed with city hall but the "gay incident" was not trivial. It was a sad day for a city that remains otherwise tolerant.
