And yet Texas attracts more people from the rest of the US than any other state.

Census Bureau: Texas posts biggest population increase

I guess they are moving down here for the poverty...

No, the state has rising population period mainly from Perry's "Come on in!" pro-illegal stances.

So illegals are moving here from other states like CA? Yeah, brilliant idea.

Nope. Completely false. Texas has the most in-migration from US citizens. Read the link next time to avoid the public schooling.

So what, McDonald's and KFC are "popular" too, mostly for the same reasons as TX.... because they're cheap! But that doesn't mean they're good for you (let alone equal to a decent meal). Although IMHO, living in Texas is probably more like the equivalent of eating dog food!

I'm not a fan of Perry-- but your ignorance of Texas is astounding...

What's hilarious is that the anti-Perry GOP crowd (mostly made up of Mitt "Flip Flop" Romney supporters) are also quietly pushing this idea that conservative red states are made up of citizens who are poorer, less educated, work minimum wage jobs, and wouldn't survive without federal government handouts. Pretty hilarious, actually. Isn't this supposed to be a liberal stereotype of red states?

Is it a stereotype if it is true?

"Federal money has consistently made up about a third of the state's budget for the past decade. The only major deviation from that trend is this year, and it stems from the $12 billion injection of stimulus money.

Campaign rhetoric obscures facts about federal money

"After sole possession of first place in 2009, Texas has fallen into a tie with Mississippi for the highest percentage of low-wage workers in the country. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2010, 550,000 Texans earned no more than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. More hourly workers in Texas earned the federal minimum wage (or less) in 2010 than did workers in California, Florida, and Illinois combined.
...
The second reason Texas is a low-wage state is that our workers tend to be less well-educated than those in other states. Nationally, less than 8 percent of employed workers lack a high school diploma or its equivalent; in Texas, nearly 12 percent of the workers have no diploma."

Low Texas wages are mostly good news

Of course it is not all doom and gloom - one does get a lot for that minimum wage in Texas- but, the fact remains, a lot of people do make less in Texas, a lot of people are less-educated in Texas, there is a huge amount of poverty in Texas and the feds help out a lot.

Constrast that to Utah, which has an average HS graduation rate in the high 80s and Massachusetts which has an average rate in the mid-80s, not so hard to understand why Perry might not be the favorite among mainstream Rs or anyone else for that matter.

Texas has been able to lure companies to Texas with the promise of cheap labor and incentives.

So basically he is taking better paying jobs out of other states to lower paying jobs in texas.

The incentives come from the State. SO much for free market capitalism.
