His standing in the polls is sagging, now below 40%.

Well, yes, that's all true. And he has not been a particularly brave or effective president either. Democrat or Republican, I'd be pretty disappointed, too. But election campaigns are about choice of both candidate and their policies. So Obama's luck lies in the near-unbelievable fact that the Republicans look determined either to pick a loser or refuse to vote for someone who could win.

the sweeping Republican gains in Congress in the midterm elections of 2010 were on the usual 40% turnout; Obama was elected in 2008 on a 61% turnout. Yet it is the Republicans who think they have a mandate from the American people. Enthusiasm rather than money – Obama had plenty of that too – decides these things, a willingness to vote.

On the evidence, Obama is well placed to win again once voters have had a chance to savour what the uncompromising 2010 Congress has done for them: not much. Give 'em Hell, Harry! Truman pulled it off in similar circumstances in 1948 by attacking the record of a pro-business, low-tax Congress; this Congress, says Warren Buffett, no less, is the friend of billionaires.

Winning shouldn't be too difficult – even for Obama, even in a double-dip recession, which we hope won't blight the US – or Tottenham.

Barack Obama is on course for a second term
Anyone running on the Republican side will very easily defeat obama. It will be the worst defeat in presidencial election history.
Live your little dreams as long as you can, obama is out in November, 2012.
I wouldn't even put much money on obama running again. His corruption is coming more to the front every day. He has a hand in so many questionable things, he may be in jail before the election. If not, he is such a total failure, he may not even run... He has absolutely NO chance..

270 is the only pole, and TP will lose all the swing states. Each party holds 200 electoral safely, Dems have coasts, GOP deep South. 140 or so in the swing states= victory or loss.

Until polling firms do state-by-state , they are useless. But FL is being polled, and RP loses to BO by a wide margin on edge of margin of error, while MR wins FL by a far tinier margin deep inside margin of error. FL is amongst the largest of swing states. CO is to the left of FL, so if GOP cannot win FL by 5 PLUS percent, it loses CO. OH is left of FL, same scenario. When state polls start en masse, a very ugly GOP image will be exposed. It is spelled T-E-A P-A-R-T-Y.

Yes, generic Republic candidate beats Obama, but Obama still leads all actual candidates. With all of the talk that Obama can't possibly win, it's important to remember that he's still beating all of the candidates who people think can win: Perry, Romney, etc.

It would actually be nice to see a "generic" Republican candidate, instead of all these psychotic freak show fascists the Repubs are putting foward now.

You're right on, Bob. The Republic Party has a Tea problem. The more the people who will decide this election see of them, the more they decide that Obama isn't so bad after all.

West Cobb, I gave an uber super example of TP effect. They pile on in safe GOP strongholds, and are as unimportant as NBA's 9th man scoring 8 points in garbage time at end of 30 point blowout. Until TP can be even a tiny group in swing states (they are minute there now), they are insignificant when turnout gets to its normal 55-60 percent presidential level as only the 140 electoral votes up for grabs count. (Texas and NY are not in the 140, LOL!! Nor Bama, Louisiana, tennessee, California, etc.)

The few states who saw BO and JM in October 2008 will be the few seeing the 2 running in 2012, and the rest of us actually serve one purpose. We offset each other, thus rendering the 140 swing states the kingmaker.
