The Progressive Movement of today is modeled after Teddy Roosevelt's political party, also known as The Progressive Party. I for one wouldn't mind seeing the GOP move more towards Teddy Roosevelt's version of Republicanism. Trouble is that the GOP is so locked into it's current ideology that they can't countenance consideration for good ideas from their party's past.

Isn't it great that Etch-a-Sketch mittens can reinvent himself?

Yes Teddy's FDA, National Parks, and trust busting are a dark eye on America's past. I also hate Wilson's attempts to end child labor.

Careful or somebody is going to miss your sarcasm there and think you are being serious. LOL.

Since the best men for the job no longer have any chance of victory, I have a hard time caring. Romney is a typical politician just as Obama is. They adapt to what they believe the people want. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing in all cases.

If you wanted somebody consistent, you're out of luck. Paul and Huntsman are not going to be nominated this year. You will have to choose between two uncentered options: Obama or Romney. Neither seems to have much in the way of convictional absolutes. Either will change positions on major issues in order to win the support of the electorate in question. Realistically, no uber-conservative Republican could have ever won the governorship in Massachusetts so Romney had to be a moderate to win. The TPers are showing up in force this primary, so Romney (and the rest of them) has to make the case that he is a solid conservative Republican. And when the general election comes, he will shift towards the center. This is nothing new. Every president during your lifetime or my lifetime did exactly the same thing to one degree or another. Obama has changed so drastically on so many positions, it wouldn't surprise me if he turned out to be a completely different person.

Consistency doesn't win votes or Jon Huntsman and Ron Paul would be the front-runners right now.

Americans seem to be happy to mock inconsistency of the candidate from the other party, but are completely oblivious to it in the candidate from their own party. That's just how the game is played these days.
