Rick Perry, son of the South, courts the Palmetto State:

One of them is voting for Perry "cause he's so nice". The 19 year old scooper opines that she will vote for Newt Gingrich because "she likes his personality". She also states that marriage equality is important to her, laments that none of the Repug candidates support marriage equality. Well, dumdum, do some research. Huntsman probably comes closest to saying that he supports same sex civil unions. either that or vote Dem. Also love the comment that lummox Perry makes that "majority rules"- tough sh*t". I suppose that would have been his comment on legal racial segregation back in the old days too.

Why do southern voters vote so much on personality traits?

Un-unh, sweetie, not so fast.
I recall the days of Clinton, where one youthful voter in PA gushed, "He's sooo CUUTE, that's why I voted for him!" and her mother said, "Anyone who can play the sax is talented enough to run a country!"

Any and everywhere you go, there are mouthbreathers who think it is a high-school popularity contest.

Or as one longtime politician baldly and cheerfully told me, "If they ever make intelligence a requirement for voting, me and 1/3 of all representatives would be unemployed!" He wasn't worried...
