There are several battleground states, including Virginia, where Libertarian candidates could help swing extremely close states to Obama. Libertarians are more aligned with Republicans so these candidates take votes away from Romney.

Little-known candidates could harm Romney, Obama bids - CNN.com

"In Nevada, a CNN/ORC International poll last month showed Goode winning 4% support and Johnson 3%, with Obama holding a 47%-44% lead over Romney in the state. Based on 2008 turnout in Nevada, the support for Goode and Johnson would amount to about 67,000 votes."

Nevada

D Obama 47%

R Romney 44%

3rd party Goode 4%

3rd part Johnson 3%

Third party gets 7% of the vote and the supporters of these candidate would otherwise support Romney. If these candidates weren't running that 7% would go to Romney and the Nevada poll would look like this

D Obama 47%

R Romney 51%

Similar situations are happening in Virginia and Colorado. These candidates will be the spoilers for the GOP like Ralph Nader was the spoiler for democrats in Florida back in 2000. If Ralph Nader had not run, Gore would have won Florida and defeated George Bush in the election.

Yep. The republicans had a chance to keep me and MANY others that are voting Libertarian as republican voters but they chose a liberal flip flopper instead of a true Conservative. No one to blame but themselves.

I have seen many posters blame this possible spoiler effect on the third party candidates or the people that vote for them. The extremist right wing conservatives only have themselves to blame. By forcing the GOP to only nominate candidates that support the Teavangelical American Taliban agenda, they lost many people that would have otherwise voted for them.

A true llibertarian is not going to vote for the party that puts people like Santorum, Bachmann, Akin and the current idiot of the month Mourdock in positions of power.

Maybe they shouldn't have completely dissed Paul and others during their convention.

The true toss up states are Virginia, Colorado and Florida so these third party candidates could really screw Mitt Romney's chances of winning these states.

Libertarian candidates are not hurting the Republicans, it is the Republicans terrible platform and unappealing policies that are hurting them.

Default Libertarian candidates could hurt Romney in key states

The fact is the GOP had a lousy field of candidates this year. And Romney probably was the best of a bad lot. But the GOP brand itself is more to blame than anything. The loony fringe stuff they're spouting is driving more voters away than any aversion to Romney.

I've voted for more Republicans than Democrats over the years, but I've also voted Libertarian once. They don't gather enough votes to matter, usually. But this year the margin of victory could be slim enough that maybe Goode and Johnson could push Obama over the top in a couple of states.

It'll be interesting to see if the GOP actually learns anything from it, though.

The GOP has gone too far to the right. It's certainly not the party of Reagan which attracted so much support from democrats in 1980 and 1984. I think in 1984 Ronald Reagan won 49 states out of 50. All the blue states went for Reagan. There are a number of Reagan's domestic polices that republicans no longer support and democrats today embrace. The moderate republican is a dying breed and the GOP is made up of far right looneys.

Romney is a chameleon. Nobody knows what he is and thats what is scary. He is just a politician that has had a life ambition of being president. Its an ego thing. His father failed so now he want to accomplish what his father failed to do. He's made his billions so now he is bored with his life.

Ron Paul would be the only Republican (maybe Huntsman) I would vote for. Libertarians are really hurting Obama in Colorado though because of their Prop 64 to legalize pot.
