It's difficult for the "metrosexual" community to understand ..... but this is Pennsylvania, a place where a fair number pf people are still trying to repeal the sexual revolution. Mr. Smith's opponent is Bob Casey (the younger), whose late father was pracically jeered off the podium when he tried to offer (dignified,BTW) opposition to abortion at a Democratic convention some years ago. And there are a fair number of aging "geriatric" Democrats who probably can't discern between the two.

The collection of single-issue radicals who have been steadily hijacking the Democratic Party sine 1972 are no more representative of a typical American community than are the Religious Right -- the "dinosaur wing" of the GOP. But judging by the incredably simplistic view of the mostly-young, sexual-freedom-obsessed nature of the resident Lefty trolls at this forum, it is not just the Republicans who have some growing up to do.

You shouldn't defend the psychotic Akin-like extremists of the world, they just embarrass your party. Difference is this wont be a news story because the guy was irrelevant in the first place since Bob Casey was so far ahead.

What the OP is pointing out in this thread is that today's Republican Party is not your grandparent's Republican Party -- a party that was tolerant and believed in science.

Today's Republican Party is a party that has morphed into an extremist intolerant party.
