We already have a list of extra parties that just aren't able to compete at the presidential level, which one of those parties should be a third party option? Should our country set up a system that makes a candidate campaign only on public money that would allow for a level playing field and make it easier for another party to answer the race?
Right now, if you want a third party, it will have to come from either the Democrats or Republicans that have chosen to break away from their own party to create a new fraction.

The party would look how the people wanted it to look that supported it, it cant be artificially created to meet a certain need as you seem to be implying, it needs to be organic...maybe its Libertarian or Green, or a mix of both. Imagine that, a party made up of two different mindsets that find a way to work together with a platform that they can both agree on with some compromises on both sides in the name of actual progress.
Look around, there are TONS of people disappointed with both the Democrats AND Republicans, let those folks sort it out. Let them get more local candidates elected to build a base of support for the platform so it can eventually elect people to higher offices...some of that is happening within the libertarian party, it just doesn't happen over night.
One of the biggest reasons that the "extra parties" as you call them aren't able to compete is because they are selectively disallowed from competition and specifically banned from the debates...hows that for democratic and free speech? I wonder why we don't have a military policy in place to occupy the US and bomb ourselves to "bring our democracy" to ourselves?
