IMO, the two are intertwined, as it has driven the wing nut fringe of the GOP (and that is a minority) into being seen a disproportinate percentage of the time.
I don't expect to see a GOP presidential win until they cleanse themselves of the TP and like fringe groups. It may depress their votes further for 1-2 presidential cycles, but long term, America needs at minimum two competitive parties for the office of POTUS (I'd like 5 plus, but never will that occur). Long-term, the GOP w/o the TP will get out of their new "norm', which is simply the unpopulated mountain states plus the Old Confederacy.
Reagan won the white vote (Per Pat Buchanan on McLaughlin Group) by 18%, and won 49 states. Whites made up 88% of vote.
Mitt won whites by 18%, and only won 2 states McCain lost in midst of an economic meltdown under a departing GOP POTUS. Whites made up 72% of vote. Mitt took 25% of Latin vote, Bush 44%. OUCH!!!
GOP wing nuts are fighting to retain a platform that only appeals to the shrinking, white male voting block. By 2016, whites will be under 70% of the vote, and by 2024, under 65%. By succeeeding in holding the party hostage, the wing nuts elected Obama. Was that their goal?
