It was a swing state landslide.

Basically, neither party can fall much below where Mitt fell to.

McCain hit absolute rock bottom - Romney only added the 2 most Republican of the swing states.

The 2004 election of Bush-Cheney vs. Kerry-Edwards was very close to these numbers. W Bush beat Kerry by 50.7 to 48.3, 62 million to 59 million. Nobody I know of called that a "landslide." Everyone, R's and D's alike, characterized it as a continuation of the 50-50, deeply divided nation. What has changed?
"Landslide" is a rather subjective term. Personally, Obama won much more easily than I had anticipated, making it a landslide in my book.

Well, put it like this.

If you accept the premise that the nation is in a very polarized phase and that each side has roughly 47% of likely voters that will vote for them no matter what.... then modern elections are really about turning out your base and winning over as much of that remaining 6% as possible.

By that measure, Obama turned out his base better AND won over virtually all of the 6% up for grabs, and did it consistently across 6 of 7 swing states. This with a struggling economy, middling approval ratings, and an alarmingly large percentage of the electorate that literally believe he is a whisper away from being satan personified.

It was not a Regan style blowout, but it might have been as close as we are going to get while the nation is as partisan as it is.

Obama -7.6 million less votes than 2008
Romney - 1.3 million less votes than McCain
Here's your 'landslide' that gave Obama the win.
The difference between between a Romney 270 win and an Obama win
NH- 40,659
FL- 73,858
OH- 103,481
VA- 115,910
total diff- 333,908 votes. Not a landslide by any definition.

In sports, no one cares by how many points you have won by if you win in the end. Our current system is measured in electoral votes and Obama won 332 and Romney won 206, that is called a landslide no matter how you want to spin it. And no matter how you spin it, the answer is always the same, Romney loses the election.

True, and 332 is 16% higher than the GOP's best total, 286, for the last 24 years.

Add in most likely, given the demographic trend, without corrective action, due to Latino population growth, the GOP will be starting a few hundred thousand futher behind in each of the large swing states next time.

Simply put, they need the Bush 44% Latino vote share as a bare minimum, to actually be competitive ever again. That does not insure a win to 270, but failure to do so insures a loss.

Default Absolutely

President Obama kicked Romney's arse. His full superiority was on full display, and Romney was nothing more than snake oil salesman fluff, inferior ideology and all.

Enjoy President Obama's second term.

Uh huh. All that money and all that effort and we're right back to where we started; dems have the white house and the senate. The repubs have the house. It's called stalemate. I'm fine with that.

That's typical of the left, the voice of the people means nothing.
