The further to the right they go, the further away from the majority of the voters they get. They already have every vote which they will ever get on the far right but you anger moderates, who out number everyone in this country, when you become too extreme. Their problem is they believed their own BS about this being "a conservative country". It's not, it a big much moderate country and if you want to win national elections you'd better damn well remember that.

Guess it didn't work out. But I have to give it to Erickson; he saw the error of his ways a while back. First he kicked out all the birthers, then followed them with the Paulistas and the teabaggers, all before the election. He sees the real danger of the Republican party becoming a permanent minority.
Although political constituencies and media consumers are not necessarily always the same thing. So at the end of the day, even principled folks like Erickson still have bills to pay and a business to run. And when they see their market share start to erode and slowly consumed by other, more "aggressive" conservative competitors (like, say the The Daily Caller for example), they may be forced to compromise their "journalistic integrity"... a dilemma both Newsweek and CNN have been facing increasingly.
What’s wrong at CNN
While CNN struggles to make 24-hour news compelling, its competitors at Fox News and MSNBC have redefined the industry. They eschewed traditional, straight-forward newsgathering in favor of partisan, personality driven analysis — a model that is increasingly successful in an era of hyperpartisan politics, but one that CNN has resisted even as its ratings continue their slow and steady decline.
Rachael Maddow discussed this editorial. I am by no means a right winger but I have to say I think the editorial makes some good points.
What do you conservatives here think?
It’s not enough for them to decry obviously ludicrous conspiracy theories, like Birtherism, while maintaining subtle but equally corrosive conspiracy theories, like Obama is a socialist.
If you’re going to manipulate people into a frenzy with hyperbole, you can’t expect them to immediately calm down and be reasonable.
$22 trillion in debt when Obama is out seals the deal, therefore arguing about gay rights, immigration, abortion and other such silly things is irrelevant. Who cares about "joining" with the views of crazy liberals who just sealed the death of the US. In a new US, there will not be a social democracy and only property owners will be able to vote, thus eliminating the "treats for votes" system which is on course to destroy the US.
Secession will occur as a matter of course, as citizens of the old US (at least in the civilized regions) will not allow thier regions to descend into chaos just to remain a part of a bankrupt, dying nation. The obligations of the US are for the US. When an area is no longer a part of the US, that "obligation" is eliminated.
Hawkeye,
When I was a little kid I used to enjoy reading Superman comic books that featured a sub-plot of an parallel universe called Bizarro World ... where everything that was true was false, things were the opposite of everything on earth - in short, the absurd was commonplace.
I think you inhabit Bizarro World.
Okay, the election didn't go your way. Get over it. Deal with it. Life goes on. The sun will rise tomorrow morning. Macy's is still putting on their Thanksgiving Parade. Obama is going to his Inauguration in January. Romney is going to enjoy his retirement with his hundreds of millions of dollars. Only you, Hawkeye, and some others, are going to wallow in bitterness, anger, and self-pity.
