I would vote for almost any DEM before a (r), but Huntsman is a pretty good candidate if he repudiates the extreme wing of his party and doesn't allow himself to get caught up in the hysteria like last year.

Depending on the Democrat; I didn't say any Democrat..Obviously you vote party line, I vote candidate..I don't happen to like his total stand on immegration and I am a little confused on some of the other stands he has taken. Taxes went up in Utah while he was governor. I have been told by people in Utah, but I realize it could just be rumors, he says one thing but doesn't always come through. Of course we could say the same about most politicians I guess.

I'm a lesser of 2 evils voter, not an all or nothing voter.

It's crazy to hear so many republicans saying they would vote for a Dem over a Repub that isn't 100% GOP.

I will always vote for the candidate who has the most in common with my beliefs...

I certainly do not think I ever said I would not vote for a Republican that was not 100% GOP. In fact, I have said over and over, I don't expect to find a candidate I 100% agree with, regardless of what letter they have next to thier name. For some reason and I can't put my finger on it, Huntsman is someone I do not trust..I too have always voted for the candidate that comes the closest to my beliefs..

To me, Huntsman is just a hypothetical. I suspect I would go democrat, but I am pretty anti-Hillary, so thinking more broadly. Also, I like the fact that he was an ambassador to China and speaks Chinese. I think that will be very valuable in the coming decade.

You do have to follow your instincts to a degree. My wife was all gaga for John Edwards, but something about the guy did not add up for me. I guess my instincts were right.

I like Huntsman better, but I think Christie would shake up DC better.

You seem to have this wild caricature of conservatives in your head, and when a conservative speaks or writes, you can only perceive the caricature.

I think there are plenty of red flags regarding Huntsman to indicate that he's a slippery eel. A school choice activist from Utah explains.
Opinion: Backed Jon Huntsman once, but never again - Patrick M. Byrne - POLITICO.com

Conservatives are naturally wary of the RINO factor after the early 2000's. We had an R WH, US House, and Senate after 2000. The result was the fastest growth in federal spending since LBJ. What a blown opportunity that was, and I think still drives GOP politics in ways that Dem observers will never understand.

I am reacting indirectly to nmnita, who said she'd rather vote democrat than for Huntsman, who is not a real republican. That struck me as odd. A lot of the GOP base has become like that, hence the purging of the RINOs. As for me, I take people on their word. If you are a gay, pro-choice republican or a racist, gun-loving democrat, I assume you have your reasons. I would not say you cannot be in the party you choose. Now, I don't know if I would vote for someone that far out of the party maintstream, but I would not really doubt their party affiliation or legitimacy.

I know that not all conservatives fit the caricature, but it seems that those who don't are ostracized by their own base, which is kind of a sign the GOP has gone from party to cult.
