More than half of the Democrats' Senate challengers in 2016 are comeback candidates. That is, they are relying on past losers (meaning they previously lost a race, not that they are bums).

"Wisconsin's Russ Feingold, Pennsylvania's Joe Sestak, Indiana's Baron Hill, and Ohio's Ted Strickland all ran underwhelming campaigns in losing office in 2010—and are looking to return to politics six years later. Party officials are courting former Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina to make a comeback bid, despite mediocre favorability ratings and the fact that she lost a race just months ago that most had expected her to win."

It is still early in the cycle and chances are more candidates in these races will come about. Feingold, Sestak, Strickland and Hagan all lost narrowly in very Republican years in a midterm election, all will be running in a higher turnout Presidential year this time around.

I hadn't heard that about Baron Hill so thanks again for an update.

Baron Hill was a blue dog leader in the house who got the boot in Nov 2010 after the passage of Obamacare in March 2010.

In general I think that the GOP has been the party of ideas since the time of Reagan, whereas the Democratic party is the party of interests. Democrats don't generate young inspirational figures like Mia Love, Elise Stefanik, Allen West, Ted Cruz, etc. It's not their DNA.

They did come up with Barack Obama in 2008, but he was an anomaly. Notice that there is no young gun on the horizon to take his mantle in 2016. There is Hillary (age 69 in 2016) Jim Webb (70) and Bernie Sanders (75).

The only idea the Democrats have is bigger and bigger government taking more and more control of our lives.

Here in WA our two US senators are Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, both Democrats. Neither are greatly impressive as senators go, IMO. Murray has been ranked by a liberal-oriented DC magazine as the dumbest senator. Cantwell was a US House member who lost her seat in the 1994 GOP sweep. She went to work for a local software company despite having no apparent tech background. She made a few million bucks from stock options, and self-funded a Senate campaign which she barely won.

But in both cases, once they got into the Senate they have proven impossible to dislodge due to the magic D by their names. I will have to say that I was happy w/ Patty Murray's role in the 2013 Murray-Ryan budget deal, but I have to wonder what her fellow Democrats thought about it, since the deal resulted in only miniscule spending hikes.

But anyway, if you look at the example of WA you can see that the lack of internecine competition for a senate post results in mediocrity.
