Actually, the Bushes, Ford, Reagan, Eisenhower and Hoover weren't "banished to obscurity" at all. They just backed off instead of getting involved in partisan politics after they retired. Presidents Johnson and Truman did pretty much the same.

Clinton introduced a new paradigm, the fact that W chose to "go retro" and adopt the elder statesman posture instead doesn't mean he is banished or hated.

The problem is that Broderick initially said she had consensual sex. Then she said rape. Then she recanted. And she was unable to provide any corroborating details. Which creates credibility issues.

As a woman, I'm inclined to believe Broderick, but legally, there is simply no proof.

Got anybody else?

I'm inclined to think that Carter introduced the new paradigm, one of continuing public service. President Clinton took it to a different level. And he was one of our younger presidents, so the "elder statesman" posture might not have been appropriate for him.
