Im trying to figure out why this has become a big deal.
Who exactly did you think leaked it in the beginning ???? it was a death bead discussion, the only people in that room were either Joe and Beau, or Joe, Beau and other blood relatives.
Joe Biden is borderline senile; this is obvious from the constant 'memory lapses' that he's always making. Likewise here - he can't understand the conventions in our society for personal space any more. I don't say that because I disagree with his politics (even though I do), I would say the same thing if he were Right-wing and had the same obvious mental issues.

I guess he shared that about his son to help make his burden lighter. I know I knew a woman, and not that well, that talked me through the death of her husband who did hospice at home. I read later that people are encouraged to talk about it. I just decided that I should be glad she felt comfortable enough to talk to me and that I was glad to be there for her once I realized the importance to her of what she had done.
Maybe he needs public support to say that it is OK not to run because I truly don't think that in SO many ways, that he wants the job.
Good for you for allowing this woman a safe space to express her grief. I mean that sincerely. By simply listening, you provided a service to that woman that was invaluable. It's uncomfortable for most of us to talk about death, so we pretend it isn't happening, and that leaves people who are going through the experience no place to express their fear and sorrow.
As for Biden, I think the term "leaked" is pejorative in this context. He talked about his son's dying wishes because it brought him comfort to speak of him. Leave it at that.
