Well, for one thing the public has a right and need to see how candidates handle themselves under pressure. Rally speeches and interviews aren't the same kind of pressure as debates.

If he comes up against Hillary in a Presidential debate it's going to be brutal. He needs all the practice he can get. The focus is getting sharper with fewer candidates and ducking debates doesn't help his credibility in terms of his ability to deliver substance over soundbites.
